Overview
Mashiro Kuna is a character from the manga series BLEACH and a prominent member of the Visored. Originally serving as the Vice-Captain of the 9th Division in the Gotei 13, she was forced into exile in the Human World following a plot orchestrated by Sosuke Aizen. Beneath her childish and exuberant demeanor lies a remarkably skilled combatant specializing in hand-to-hand fight.
Appearance
Mashiro Kuna is a petite woman with short green hair and brown eyes. One hundred years prior, she sported wavy short hair, a black Shihakusho with a red neck scarf, white round-framed glasses resting on her head, and a Zanpakuto worn at her waist belt. In modern times, her hair is straight, and she wears a white tight bodysuit paired with an orange neck scarf, orange gloves, orange boots, and white round goggles on her head, carrying her Zanpakuto on her back. Upon returning to the Gotei 13, she attaches a custom badge reading "SUPER 9" to her left sleeve. Her Hollow mask features large eye holes and two white antennae on top, resembling an insectoid hero mask.
Personality
Mashiro possesses a childish, energetic, and highly expressive personality, often throwing tantrums over minor matters. She frequently acts spoiled around Kensei Muguruma, taking pleasure in annoying him. She has a habit of bestowing unique nicknames on others—such as appending "-n" or "-cchi" to their names and calling Ichigo Kurosaki "Berry-tan"—yet addresses Kensei strictly without honorifics. Though appearing spacey and loud, she is surprisingly intelligent. Her favorite food is kinako ohagi.
Abilities
Despite carrying a Zanpakuto with a rectangular guard, Mashiro rarely draws her sword in battle, relying instead on Hakuda hand-to-hand combat centered around powerful kick techniques prefixed with "Mashiro-". She is capable of discharging green Cero blasts directly from her feet while delivering kicks. Her Hollowfication capability is extraordinary; unlike the other Visored, she could maintain her Hollow mask for 15 consecutive hours from the start without undergoing any duration training. Though she seldom unsheaths her weapon except to subdue Ichigo Kurosaki's rampage, she later helped guide Shuhei Hisagi's Bankai training.
Background
One hundred ten years ago, Mashiro served as the Vice-Captain of the 9th Division under Captain Kensei Muguruma. During an investigation into soul disappearances in Rukongai, she discovered the discarded uniforms of missing division members. Shortly after, she fell victim to Sosuke Aizen's plot and Kaname Tosen's ambush, becoming the second victim of forced Hollowfication. Saved by Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin, she escaped to the Human World and formed the Visored. Decades later, she assisted Ichigo Kurosaki in mastering his Hollow form and joined the battle in Karakura Town. After Aizen's defeat cleared her of false charges, she returned to Soul Society, adopting the title "Super Vice-Captain" alongside Vice-Captain Shuhei Hisagi, working as a reporter for the Seireitei Communication and joining the fight against the Wandenreich.
Relationships
Kensei Muguruma is her superior from her 9th Division days, whom she constantly annoys yet deeply trusts. Shuhei Hisagi is the Vice-Captain of the 9th Division over whom Mashiro asserts authority under her self-proclaimed "Super Vice-Captain" title while guiding his Bankai training. Kuna Niko is her younger sister, who works as a researcher in the Department of Research and Development. She shared a long exile with her fellow Visored companions—Shinji Hirako, Hiyori Sarugaki, Lisa Yadomaru, Hachigen Ushoda, Love Aikawa, and Rojuro Otoribashi—and assisted Ichigo Kurosaki, whom she affectionately calls "Berry-tan", in mastering his Hollow power.
Trivia
Mashiro's distinctive costume, insectoid Hollow mask, combat calls, and poses heavily homage Japanese tokusatsu superhero tropes, particularly Kamen Rider. Additionally, she is unique among all the Visored for being the only member who never needed to undergo arduous endurance training to prolong her Hollow transformation.
