Overview
Zabimaru is the Zanpakuto spirit belonging to Renji Abarai in Tite Kubo's manga series BLEACH. In its original form, it manifests as a white-furred baboon with a snake for a tail, featuring separate personalities for its main body and tail. During the anime-original Zanpakuto Unknown Tales arc, it takes on a unique dual-person spirit form consisting of a woman with monkey features and a young boy with a snake tail.
Appearance
In its true form, Zabimaru is a baboon with white fur and a snake tail. When physically materialized in the anime story arc, it splits into two distinct individuals linked together by a chain. The female entity, Saru, features green fur covering her body except for her hands, face, and chest area. The young boy entity, Hebi, wears white clothing along with a yellow collar and possesses a tail.
Personality
Both aspects of Zabimaru share a strong desire for power, with the snake component exhibiting rough speech. Upon physical manifestation, they initially rebelled against their master, Renji Abarai, viewing him as weak and overly dependent on them. Even after being defeated and forced to submit once more, they maintain a headstrong and challenging attitude toward him.
Abilities
Unleashed by the command 'Roar, Zabimaru', its Shikai transforms the blade into a broad, segmented whip-sword connected by wire, ideal for hit-and-away long-range combat with high impact, though restricted to three consecutive extensions before requiring a reset. Its emergency technique, Higa Zekko, launches broken blade fragments at the target, causing severe strain that prevents further Shikai use for a period. In materialized form, the pair uses their connecting chain to throw each other as combat projectiles. It also possesses a Bankai state known as Hihio Zabimaru.
Background
As Renji Abarai's Zanpakuto, Zabimaru serves as his primary weapon throughout his battles, notable for being the first Shikai demonstrated in the series. During the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales event, the spirit rebelled against Renji after deeming him unworthy. They pushed Renji to the brink of defeat by breaking his sword, but were ultimately subdued when Renji regained his Shikai and used Higa Zekko. Later, in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Renji discovers an unexpected truth regarding Zabimaru at the Soul King Palace.
Relationships
Renji Abarai is its master; though the spirit turned against him due to assessing him as weak, it yielded back to him after a decisive duel. The materialized forms of Saru and Hebi share an inseparable bond, remaining physically connected by a chain.
Trivia
The visual design for the materialized female form was adapted from a one-panel appearance of a female-version Zabimaru in a spin-off comic. Within the lore, this transformation was attributed to a side effect or optional setting listed in paperwork provided by Mayuri Kurotsuchi during a sword repair offer.
