Overview
Hisagi Shuuhei is a Soul Reaper in BLEACH who serves as the Lieutenant of the Gotei 13's Ninth Division. Following the defection of his former captain, he assumed administrative leadership over the division while also working as the Editor-in-Chief of the Seireitei Communication. Evaluated as a prodigy expected to reach seated officer status even before graduating from the Shin'o Academy, he is a senior to Renji Abarai, Izuru Kira, and Momo Hinamori. Although upright, dutiful, and highly capable, he frequently finds himself targeted for humor or suffering tragic bad luck. He serves as the main protagonist of the official novel BLEACH Can't Fear Your Own World.
Appearance
He has short black hair, black eyes, and a tattoo reading "69" on his left cheek. His right cheek is marked by a three-line scar extending across his face, which left his right eye with impaired vision. He wears a sleeveless variation of the dark Shinigami uniform paired with black bands around his upper arms and neck, which house hidden explosives.
Personality
Deeply loyal, responsible, and skilled at cooking, Shuuhei takes combat with gravity. He strictly abides by the teachings of his former mentor, Kaname Tosen, that those who do not fear the blade they wield have no right to hold one. Despite his sharp visual design, he is approachable and frequently played for laughs, such as being chastised for riding a motorcycle through the Seireitei or having an unrequited crush on Rangiku Matsumoto.
Abilities
His Zanpakuto is named Kazeshini. Upon its Shikai release with the command "Reap," it transforms into twin S-shaped scythe blades joined by a long chain, allowing unpredictable spinning strikes controlled via the linkage. He complements his swordplay with Kido spells and explosive accessories. His Bankai, Fushi no Kojyo, binds both himself and his opponent with chains to continuously siphon spiritual pressure.
Background
Hailing from the Rukongai, he was saved from a Hollow in his childhood by Kensei Muguruma, inspiring his desire to join the Gotei 13. While a student at the Shin'o Academy, he led a field trip where he shielded lowerclassmen from a massive Hollow attack, acquiring his distinct facial scars. Following Kaname Tosen's betrayal of Soul Society, Shuuhei carried the administrative load of the Ninth Division and fought steadfastly throughout subsequent crises.
Relationships
He held absolute respect for his former captain, Kaname Tosen, maintaining his core philosophical teachings long after Tosen's defection. He idolizes Kensei Muguruma, who saved his life during childhood. He holds a romantic crush on Rangiku Matsumoto and shares a friendly drinking relationship with Izuru Kira. Renji Abarai, Izuru Kira, and Momo Hinamori look up to him as a reliable academy senior.
Trivia
Influenced by the Human World, he enjoys music and learned how to play the guitar after receiving lessons from Yasutora Sado, aspiring to form a band. He also authors serial columns in the Seireitei Communication, though his features are frequently canceled due to low popularity rankings before occasionally being brought back.
