Overview

Kurotsuchi Mayuri is a prominent character in BLEACH who serves as the Captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and the second President of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Originally incarcerated as a dangerous inmate in the underground facility known as the Maggot's Nest, he was released by his predecessor Kisuke Urahara and ultimately assumed leadership of the division. He is an eccentric and utterly ruthless mad scientist who shows no hesitation in employing unethical means to further his groundbreaking research and technological innovations.

Appearance

Mayuri features yellow pupils and elaborate black-and-white face paint. Beneath his makeup, he has short blue hair, brownish skin, and numerous surgical scars across his body. A notably long nail grows on his right middle finger. He wears a captain's robe featuring a folded dark purple collar, with his headgear and hairstyle changing frequently across story arcs. His body is extensively modified to conceal devices, such as a sickle hidden in his ear and an extendable wire inside his left arm.

Personality

Mayuri is a cold-hearted, cruel scientist with an insatiable appetite for research and unethical experimentation. Possessing exceptional intelligence, he is extremely cautious and thoroughly analyzes opponents before entering combat. He harbors an intense hatred for the concept of perfection, viewing it as a state that halts progress and leads to despair. Although he generally looks down on others, he maintains strict loyalty to the commands of Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto and acts with pragmatic conviction to protect the Gotei 13.

Abilities

Mayuri combines his Zanpakuto, Kido, and scientific devices in battle. His Shikai, Ashisogi Jizo, released with the command Kakimushire, severs the brain signals that control an enemy's limbs while retaining pain sensation. His Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, takes the form of a giant baby-headed caterpillar that spreads lethal poison gas derived from his blood across a 100-kan radius or strikes with poison blades from its chest. Its modified form, Makai Fushin Shotai, births customized entities designed to counter specific opponents. He also uses numerous inventions, including the Superhuman Drug that vastly slows perception of time, consciousness-looping drugs, optical camouflage, and body-regenerating injections.

Background

Originally imprisoned in the Maggot's Nest facility as a dangerous threat, Mayuri was released 110 years ago by Kisuke Urahara to serve as Vice President of the Research and Development Institute and third seat of the 12th Division. Following Urahara's exile, Mayuri succeeded him as Division Captain and Institute President. During his research on Quincy, he experimented on Soken Ishida, the grandfather of Uryu Ishida. Throughout major conflicts including the Hueco Mundo campaigns and the Thousand-Year Blood War, his inventions and tactical intellect proved pivotal to Soul Society's survival.

Relationships

Mayuri created the artificial Shinigami Kurotsuchi Nemu to serve as his lieutenant and daughter, treating her harshly while harboring intense pride in her as his ultimate masterpiece. He harbors a deep rivalrous enmity toward Kisuke Urahara, acknowledging his superior intellect while striving to surpass him. He shares a grim history with the Quincy Uryu Ishida after killing Uryu's grandfather for research, though the two later cooperate when necessary. Despite frequent clashes with Zaraki Kenpachi, Mayuri recognizes Zaraki's raw martial prowess and assists him in key operations.
