Overview

Uryuu Ishida is a main character in BLEACH, acting as a classmate and combat ally to the protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki. He is one of the few surviving Quincy, a clan of spirit-slaying archers historically wiped out by the Shinigami. Initially harboring hatred toward Shinigami and opposing Ichigo, he becomes a trusted comrade after fighting Hollows together. Exceptionally intelligent, he eventually serves as student council president at his high school, fighting with spirit bows while upholding Quincy pride.

Appearance

He has dark blue-black short hair (parted in the middle, later to the side), jewel-blue eyes, and wears glasses. He wears standard school uniforms in daily life and white Quincy outfits with a mantle during battle, preferring shorter capes. In his Quincy Vollständig state, he lacks the usual halo above his head but manifests feather-patterned spirit wings on his back, alongside feather-like spirit armor over his limbs and chest.

Personality

Calm and composed with a somewhat dramatic way of speaking, he is secretly warm-hearted, deeply righteous, and values friendship. He struggles to express his true feelings honestly and often tries to hide his embarrassment. Despite his stoic exterior, he frequently plays the straight man to his erratic friends. As president of the handicraft club, he is skilled at sewing, though his habit of adding unexpected fancy ribbons and Quincy motifs to plushies often leaves others baffled. He also enjoys making mackerel simmered in miso.

Abilities

He gathers atmospheric reishi to form bows and arrows for ranged combat, utilizing weapons like Kojaku and Ginrei Kojaku to fire barrages such as Licht Regen. He also employs the Seele Schneider—a chainsaw-like reishi edge—and silver tubes (Gintou) to execute spatial spells like Heizen and Sprenge. His movement techniques include Hirenkyaku for high-speed maneuvering and Ransoutengai to control his body using spirit threads. His Schrift 'A' ability, Antithesis, allows him to reverse or swap events (such as damage taken) between two designated targets.

Background

Raised by his grandfather and master, Souken Ishida, Uryuu learned the Quincy ways while defying his father Ryuuken, who rejected their heritage. His hatred for Shinigami stemmed from his grandfather's death, though fighting alongside Ichigo gradually built mutual trust. After losing his Quincy powers during the Soul Society arc, he regained them through intense training with his father. In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, he joins the Wandenreich and is designated as Yhwach's successor, though he secretly acts to avenge his late mother and protect his friends. In the aftermath, he becomes a physician.

Relationships

He shares a bickering yet deeply loyal friendship with Ichigo Kurosaki. He holds high respect for his late grandfather Souken Ishida as his master, whereas his relationship with his father Ryuuken Ishida remained strained for a long time. Mayuri Kurotsuchi is his grandfather's enemy, leading to a complex relationship where they occasionally aid each other out of necessity. Within the Wandenreich, he stands against Yhwach and Jugram Haschwalth, while maintaining strong bonds with school friends like Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado.

Trivia

He is frequently depicted reading books, including foreign literature. He personally prefers zippers over buttons. Due to his distinct aesthetic taste and constant sewing habits in the handicraft club, he earned the playful moniker 'glasses sewing machine' from Kon and others.
