Beneath her stoic and obedient exterior, Canary harbors deep care and unspoken affection for Killua Zoldyck, constantly balancing the rigid demands of her position with her inner compassion.
Appearance
Canary is a young dark-skinned woman with dark maroon-tinted curly hair bound into distinctive spike-like bundles, with her eyebrows covered by her bangs. She wears the formal black suit and tie attire worn by all servants of the Zoldyck household. Her signature equipment is a combat staff with a distinct spherical orb integrated into its handle.
Personality
Canary maintains a professional and stoic demeanor, striving to fulfill her duties with absolute discipline. Beneath this rigid facade, however, she is deeply empathetic and soft-hearted. Because Zoldyck household rules strictly forbid servants from befriending their masters, she endures constant internal conflict over her fond feelings for Killua Zoldyck. Though dedicated to her role, her emotional warmth resurfaces when witnessing unyielding determination, leading her to prioritize the well-being of those she cares about over strict protocol.
Abilities
Canary is a formidable martial artist who fights using a custom cane fitted with a sphere at the handle. Her martial prowess is illustrated by her recorded feat of single-handedly neutralizing a force of one hundred men led by Seaquant. In the 2011 television anime adaptation, she is additionally depicted as capable of utilizing the advanced movement and assassination technique known as Rhythm Echo.
Background
Canary serves as a front-line guard at the Zoldyck estate on Kukuroo Mountain. When Gon Freecss and his friends arrived to retrieve Killua Zoldyck, Canary repeatedly repelled Gon to perform her duties. Moved by Gon's absolute resolve, she broke her professional restraint, shared her true wish for Killua's rescue, and allowed the group to pass. She later accompanied Killua alongside senior staff members Gotoh and Amane when Killua departed the estate with Alluka Zoldyck. The 2011 anime adaptation establishes her background as an escapee originating from Meteor City.
Relationships
Canary shares a complex bond with Killua Zoldyck, harboring secret affection and fierce loyalty toward him that transcends their master-servant dynamic. While she initially confronted Gon Freecss as a trespasser, his unwavering determination won her trust, leading her to entrust Killua's welfare to him. She also maintains a professional working relationship with senior butler Gotoh and fellow servant Amane, serving alongside them during security and escort assignments.
Trivia
In the stage musical adaptation of the series, Canary was portrayed by Masami Suzuki. The musical included an original story event where Canary appeared to be killed, only to be miraculously saved from the brink of death by Hisoka utilizing his Bungee Gum ability.
