Overview
Isaac Netero is a major character in the series HUNTER×HUNTER, serving as the 12th Chairman of the Hunter Association and Head of the Exam Commission. As the grandmaster of Shingen-ryu kung fu, he is widely recognized as one of the most powerful Nen users in human history. Despite his advanced age of well over a century, he retains formidable administrative authority and elite combat prowess. Throughout his role, Netero balances his official responsibilities with a personal desire to test his lifelong martial abilities against ultimate opponents.
Appearance
Isaac Netero is depicted as an elderly man featuring white hair styled into a short topknot, accompanied by a long beard and mustache that he trims shorter during the Chimera Ant arc. His usual attire consists of a loose kimono-style top paired with comfortable cargo pants. When entering serious battle, he changes into form-fitting spandex shorts and a dedicated T-shirt emblazoned with the character for Heart. He also wears jewelry in his ears.
Personality
On the surface, Isaac Netero exhibits a lighthearted, eccentric, and playful demeanor, often delighting in teasing younger applicants or smoothly deflecting hostile provocations. Allies sometimes view his character as mischievous or difficult to read. Beneath this jovial facade lies a deeply disciplined martial artist with an unyielding dedication to his craft. While his executive role forces him to make complex political decisions, he remains fundamentally driven by the thrill of engaging in genuine battle against absolute strength.
Abilities
Isaac Netero is an Enhancement-type Nen user possessing exceptional physical durability. His signature technique, the 100-Type Guanyin, summons a giant multi-armed Bodhisattva statue that delivers relentless strikes, including the hand-chop First Hand, the crushing Third Hand, and the massive barrage Ninety-Ninth Hand. Through intense meditation and training, his activation prayer exceeds supersonic speeds. His ultimate attack, the Zero Hand, traps the target within the statue's palms and fires his remaining aura as a devastating beam. He also carries the implanted Miniature Rose bomb inside his chest, set to detonate upon his heart stopping.
Background
At forty-six years old, feeling he had reached his physical ceiling, Isaac Netero retreated into the mountains to perform ten thousand daily punches of gratitude. By age fifty, his continuous training allowed him to complete the ritual in under an hour with strikes exceeding the speed of sound. Decades prior to the main story, he survived a clash against Maha Zoldyck. During the Chimera Ant crisis, Netero personally led the extermination effort. Facing King Meruem in a violent duel, he sacrificed two limbs before detonating the Miniature Rose bomb in his heart to secure victory for humanity.
Relationships
Isaac Netero fought a desperate duel against the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, acknowledging the King's extraordinary power while defeating him through human resolve. He also easily repelled Royal Guard Neferpitou during their encounter. Netero shared a long-standing relationship with Zeno Zoldyck and was notably the only fighter to engage Zeno's grandfather, Maha Zoldyck, and survive. During the Hunter Exam, he took an interest in Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck while deflecting Hisoka's hostility. He is also the father of Beyond Netero.
Trivia
In his earlier years, Isaac Netero was part of the legendary Hunter group known as the Seirin Squad. Prior to his final mission, he left a secret video recording for the Twelve Zodiacs detailing instructions for electing a new chairman and addressing any claims regarding his son. In the third Weekly Shonen Jump popularity poll for the series, he ranked in 25th place.
