Overview
Shaiapouf is a character in HUNTER×HUNTER and one of the three Royal Guards serving the Chimera Ant King, Meruem. Operating as the strategic mastermind among the guards, he possesses exceptional intellect and resourcefulness. Although outwardly calm and refined, Shaiapouf is driven by a fanatical idealism regarding how the King ought to rule, leading him to scheme independently to preserve his vision of an absolute sovereign.
Appearance
Shaiapouf appears as a handsome young man dressed in a white shirt and formal tuxedo. He features insect antennae on his head and large butterfly-like wings on his back. Unlike many Chimera Ants, he possesses five slender, flexible fingers identical to a human's, allowing him to play the violin. He has short blonde hair and red eyes.
Personality
Behind his sophisticated facade, Shaiapouf is an intensely volatile strategist. His fanatical idealism leads him to employ any means necessary to achieve his goals, even acting behind the King's back if he believes it serves his vision. He refuses to accept any flaw or emotional softening in Meruem, demanding that the King remain an unshakeable, absolute ruler. When under severe stress, he frequently succumbs to dramatic self-intoxication and self-loathing, playing his violin and convincing himself that his burden is merely a minor matter.
Abilities
Shaiapouf is a pure Manipulator with aura reserves vastly surpassing human Nen users. His ability Spiritual Message scatters hypnotic scales that visualize aura flows to analyze an opponent's emotions, thoughts, and capabilities. His Beelzebub technique allows him to split his body down to the cellular level into countless tiny fly-like clones while retaining a commander body at least the size of a bee; this ability prohibits the simultaneous use of Spiritual Message. Additionally, he can cocoon individuals to transform them into Chimera Ants and bestow tailored Nen abilities, bypassing standard aura memory limitations.
Background
Born as a Royal Guard to serve Meruem, Shaiapouf managed operations at the East Gorteau palace to construct the King's empire. When Meruem began to develop human compassion through his interactions with Komugi, Shaiapouf desperately schemed in secret to assassinate her and restore Meruem to an unyielding conqueror. During the assault by the extermination team, he sacrificed most of his physical mass to feed and revive a critically injured Meruem following the Poor Man's Rose explosion. He then attempted to suppress the amnesiac King's memories of Komugi, but ultimately succumbed to the deadly poison of the Rose bomb.
Relationships
Shaiapouf harbors an obsessive, almost fanatical loyalty toward Meruem, though unlike Neferpitou—who accepts the King unconditionally—he prioritizes his own ideal vision of Meruem over the King's actual desires. His fellow Royal Guard Menthuthuyoupi frequently noted his tendency to overthink matters. Shaiapouf views Komugi with intense hatred, identifying her as the primary threat that softens Meruem's ruthless perfection, and continually seeks her destruction.
Trivia
The character's name is derived from a combination of the Egyptian deity Shai and the character Pouf from the French children's book series Caroline et ses Amis. Unlike most Chimera Ants in the series who possess non-human hand structures, Shaiapouf is depicted with human-like five-fingered hands, enabling his hobby of violin playing.
