Killua Zoldyck

Overview

Killua Zoldyck is one of the main protagonists in the manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter. Hailing from the Republic of Padokea, he is the third son of the notorious Zoldyck family of elite assassins. Rebelling against the strict bloodline expectations placed upon him by his family, he ran away from home and later became the sole qualified candidate to pass the 288th Hunter Exam. Upon forming a deep bond of friendship with Gon Freecss, he travels alongside him while searching for his own true purpose in life.

Appearance

Killua is a young boy with soft, spiky silver hair and sharp, cat-like blue eyes. Despite his young age, he possesses a surprisingly muscular build with defined abdominal muscles. He generally wears casual, mobile clothing, such as a white t-shirt over a long-sleeved dark turtleneck shirt paired with loose shorts. At times, he carries a yellow skateboard with him.

Personality

Killua possesses a sharp intellect and a calm, analytical mind, often evaluating situations with realistic caution. While he can be sarcastic and impudent toward adults, he also exhibits typical childhood traits, such as an intense love for sweets and video games. Though he maintains a cold detachment from most people, he is deeply caring toward those he trusts, particularly his close friend Gon Freecss. When switching to his assassin state, his demeanor shifts into that of a ruthless killer.

Abilities

As a Transmuter, Killua converts his aura into high-voltage electricity, a skill made possible by his lifelong resistance to electric torture. His techniques include Thunderbolt (Izutsushi), releasing shocks from his palms; Lightning Bolt (Narukami), dropping lightning from above; and Godspeed (Kanmuru), which runs electricity through his body to bypass normal physical reaction limits. Godspeed splits into Speed of Lightning for ultra-fast manual movement and Whirlwind for automatic counterattacks based on enemy intent. He is also trained in Zoldyck assassination arts like Silent Gaits (Anpo), Rhythm Echo (Shikyo), and claw transformation, and he fights using two custom 50-kilogram metal yo-yos.

Background

Raised in the Zoldyck assassin lineage, Killua underwent harsh survival and torture training from the age of three. Rebellious against his family's rigid control, he wounded his mother Kikyo and brother Milluki to flee home. He entered the Hunter Exam out of boredom, forming a life-changing friendship with Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio. Although forced into disqualification during his first attempt due to his brother Illumi's influence, he later took the exam again and passed as the sole candidate. During his travels with Gon, he discovered and removed a needle Illumi had secretly embedded in his brain to control him through fear. After using the power of his sibling Alluka to heal a critically injured Gon, Killua bade farewell to Gon to travel the world while protecting Alluka.

Relationships

Gon Freecss is Killua's invaluable best friend and constant traveling companion throughout his journey. He shares strong bonds with Kurapika and Leorio, formed during the Hunter Exam. Within the Zoldyck family, his father Silva and grandfather Zeno hold high expectations for his talent, whereas his eldest brother Illumi sought to control him through psychological manipulation and embedded Nen needles. He maintains a strained business-like relationship with his brother Milluki, but harbors a deep protective devotion toward his younger sibling Alluka and Nanika. He also respects his master Biscuit Krueger and considers the Chimera Ant Ikalgo a loyal ally.

Trivia

Killua's physical strength constantly increases over the course of the story, as shown by his ability to open progressively heavier test gates at the Zoldyck estate. He has an uncommonly extreme sweet tooth, once spending his entire earnings from Heavens Arena exclusively on snacks. The two heavy metal yo-yos he relies on in battle were custom-made for him by his second older brother, Milluki.
