Overview
Ponzu is a character appearing in HUNTER×HUNTER. She is an examinee in the Hunter Exam and an amateur Hunter who is aware of the existence of Nen. Lacking strong physical combat capabilities, she operates primarily as a strategic contender who relies on chemical agents and calculated traps.
Appearance
She wears a large, round hat that conceals a swarm of bees inside. Her clothing design and color scheme differ across the original manga, the 1999 anime, the 2011 anime, and video game adaptations; specifically, in the game Ryuumyaku no Saidan, she is depicted with brown hair, a yellow top, and black trousers.
Personality
Rational, patient, and highly meticulous, Ponzu possesses a cautious mindset that avoids taking unnecessary risks. She disdains direct violence and physical conflict, preferring a defensive, wait-and-see approach that relies on careful preparation rather than reckless confrontation.
Abilities
She is proficient in utilizing various chemical compounds, specializing in battlefield control through pre-set traps and sleeping gas. Concealed inside her hat are venomous bees known as Sibireyaribachi, which automatically attack anyone attempting to cause her harm. Furthermore, she can command these bees to convey written messages to distant locations or search for specific Hunters and Nen users. In video game titles and author notes, her capabilities are categorized under the Manipulation discipline.
Background
During the Fourth Phase of the 287th Hunter Exam, Ponzu tracked her target Bourbon into a cave, but her poisonous bees accidentally caused his death via anaphylactic shock. With Bourbon dead, his snake traps remained active, trapping her inside until Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrived. She agreed to flood the cavern with sleeping gas to neutralize the snakes, allowing them to escape, but while unconscious, Leorio took her number plate, causing her to fail the exam. She took the 288th exam the following year, but failed again when Killua eliminated all applicants. Later, she joined Pokkle's team to investigate NGL, where they were ambushed by the Chimera Ant Zazan squad. Although she released her bees to send a warning to other Hunters, she was shot and consumed by the soldier Gyogan.
Relationships
Pokkle is a close ally with whom she shared a strong bond, eventually forming an exploration team together to investigate NGL. During the Fourth Phase of the Hunter Exam, she encountered Gon Freecss, Kurapika, and Leorio Paladiknight in a trapped cave, escaping the cavern through Gon's courageous plan and exceptional breath-holding endurance.
Trivia
Her portrayal varies across adaptations; in the 1999 anime, she is presented with a slightly more mature persona compared to the manga and 2011 series, receiving expanded screen time during the anime-original Battleship Island arc. She also frequently appears in game adaptations, most notably in the PlayStation 2 title Ryuumyaku no Saidan, where despite being the sole non-licensed amateur among the roster, she serves as a playable character utilizing long-range bee attacks and tear gas.
