Overview

Morel Mackernasey is a character in HUNTER×HUNTER. He is a Single-Star Sea Hunter and a veteran Nen user handpicked to serve as a core member of the Chimera Ant Extermination Team. Highly trusted by Chairman Isaac Netero, Morel also acts as the mentor to Knuckle Bine and Shoot McMahon. Following his monumental contributions during the Chimera Ant campaign, he becomes a candidate for promotion to a Triple-Star Hunter and gains prominent standing within the Hunter Association, ranking high in its chairman election.

Appearance

Morel is a tall, muscular man who consistently wears dark sunglasses over his eyes and carries a giant smoking pipe strapped to his back. His physical appearance is marked by long greyish-white hair, a prominent nose, wrinkled skin, and an absence of visible eyebrows.

Personality

Morel displays a bold, confident demeanor while remaining calm and perceptive under pressure. Guided by a strong personal core, he is pragmatic enough to adapt flexibly to critical situations rather than sticking rigidly to pride. In battle, he values genuine clashes where both opponents give their all, maintaining an unshakeable determination to win regardless of the odds. Despite his stern leadership, he possesses a deeply compassionate nature, readily moved to tears by the suffering of others and willing to offer protection. As a dedicated field operative, he prioritizes practical on-the-ground execution and frequently butts heads with administrative superiors.

Abilities

As a Manipulator Nen user, Morel possesses astonishing lung capacity and diving stamina. Using his giant pipe, he employs Deep Purple to manipulate smoke into solid structures, ropes, boats, or small animals for reconnaissance, with the smoke also serving as a sensor akin to En. If he loses his pipe, he cannot generate new smoke techniques, though existing smoke remains under his control. Through his Smoke Soldiers technique, he encapsulates Nen cores in smoke to manifest up to 216 controllable decoys, capable of mimicking specific individuals or executing precise tactics when fewer units are deployed. He can also form Smokey Jail, an imperishable physical barrier designed to trap formidable foes.

Background

Morel was dispatched alongside Knov by Chairman Isaac Netero to handle the Chimera Ant crisis across NGL and East Gorteau. Tasked with reconnaissance and disruption, he successfully outmaneuvered and defeated high-ranking enemy Squadron Leaders including Cheetu and Leol. During the palace assault, despite suffering from severe battle fatigue, he engaged the Royal Guards Shaiapouf and Menthuthuyoupi to isolate the King, enduring life-threatening injuries in the process. Following the resolution of the crisis, he recovered and took an active role in the 13th Chairman Election, while also arranging medical care for the critically injured Gon Freecss. Later, he commands his vessel to transport the Hunter Association toward the gateway to the Dark Continent.

Relationships

Morel enjoys the deep trust of Chairman Isaac Netero, who selected him alongside Knov to head the Chimera Ant Extermination Team. He serves as a demanding yet caring master to his apprentices, Knuckle Bine and Shoot McMahon, and demonstrates great concern for younger Hunters by securing top-tier medical assistance for Gon Freecss. He also formed a unique connection with the Chimera Ant Colt, offering him and the newborn infant protection out of sympathy for Colt's devotion to the Queen. On the battlefield, he directly clashed with formidable Chimera Ants, including Squadron Leaders Cheetu and Leol, as well as Royal Guards Shaiapouf and Menthuthuyoupi.

Trivia

Following his pivotal role in the extermination mission, Morel was put forward as a candidate for promotion from Single-Star to Triple-Star Hunter. He also demonstrated widespread respect within the Hunter Association by finishing eighth in the fifth voting round of the 13th Chairman Election. Morel views himself not primarily as a front-line brawler, but as a specialist whose versatile Nen abilities were perfectly suited for the complex tactical demands of the operation.
