Overview

Senritsu is a licensed Music Hunter and an Emitter-type Nen user from the series HUNTER×HUNTER. Serving as a bodyguard within the Nostrade Family, she possesses extraordinary auditory capabilities and uses aura-infused music to analyze minds and heal allies. Known for her calm disposition and sharp insight, she plays a vital supporting role for Kurapika and their companions.

Appearance

Senritsu is a woman with a distinct visual appearance characterized by a balding head and prominent buck teeth. Her body was physically afflicted by a curse, leaving her with a diseased arm that she keeps concealed beneath her clothing. Initially depicted with a sinister facial design, her features gradually evolved into a more endearing, mascot-like expression as the story progressed.

Personality

Senritsu is a compassionate, sensitive, and emotionally intuitive individual who easily recognizes the inner feelings and troubles of those around her. Within dangerous bodyguard environments, she acts as a soothing and grounded voice of reason. She demonstrates immense empathy toward Kurapika upon understanding his painful history, becoming one of his most trusted confidants. Her strong sense of morality is also shown during the succession contest, where she is deeply moved by the sincere efforts of the younger royal princes.

Abilities

As an Emitter, Senritsu has exceptional hearing that enables her to track footsteps, eavesdrop on distant conversations, and discern a person's honesty, emotions, and mental state via their heartbeat. However, hearing abnormal psychological states like Chrollo Lucilfer's lack of fear toward death causes her severe distress. Using a flute, she channels aura into songs such as Field of Spring to relieve exhaustion and illness. In her full-power performance, which functions even over audio speakers, she captures listeners' minds within a world of sound for three minutes, completely immobilizing them. While covering one's ears blocks the effect, attempting to defend with Nen upon initial exposure counterproductively heightens its impact.

Background

Senritsu's life was drastically changed after she listened to just one bar of the flute movement of the Sonata of Darkness, a cursed composition attributed to the Devil. Although it unlocked her Nen abilities, the music caused her body to become heavily disfigured, while her friend who played the piece died agonizingly. Resolved to restore her body and prevent further casualties, she became a Music Hunter to find and destroy the score. She joined the Nostrade Family to access collector networks, working alongside Kurapika to guard Neon Nostrade and track the Phantom Troupe. She later guarded the hospital where Gon Freecss was recovering, and eventually accepted Kurapika's request to serve as a bodyguard for Prince Kacho during the Kakin Empire expedition.

Relationships

Senritsu shares a strong relationship of mutual trust with Kurapika, serving as a rare emotional support who understands his tragic background. She holds high regard for Leorio Paladiknight after hearing his virtuous heartbeat, encouraging him to pursue a career as a doctor or teacher. She also deeply respects the bond between Kurapika, Gon Freecss, and Killua Zoldyck. Conversely, listening to Phantom Troupe leader Chrollo Lucilfer's heartbeat filled her with dread due to his complete indifference toward death. During the succession contest, she serves as a dedicated bodyguard to Prince Kacho.

Trivia

Senritsu's name is believed to be a play on words combining the Japanese terms for melody and shudder or thrill. In author comments for Volume 11, creator Yoshihiro Togashi cited characters such as Nausicaä, Yupa, and Ashitaka as conceptual inspirations owing to their cursed circumstances, compassionate temperaments, and flutist elements. Additionally, the 1999 anime adaptation featured an expanded scene depicting her as the sole applicant visiting the employment agency immediately after Kurapika's initial departure.
