Menthuthuyoupi

Overview

A character from HUNTER×HUNTER. Menthuthuyoupi, often called Youpi, is one of the three Royal Guards serving the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, and the last of the trio to hatch. Unlike Neferpitou and Shaiapouf, he is a hybrid Chimera Ant created entirely from magical beast genes without any human DNA. Lacking a complex human ego or individual attachments, he serves as an unyielding shield for the King through pure, instinctual loyalty. With his gigantic physical frame and overwhelming aura capacity, he stands as a formidable obstacle to the Extermination Team during the invasion.

Appearance

Youpi has a massive, heavily built physique resembling a semi-naked giant. He wears no clothes or accessories, though his lower body down to below the knees is covered in fur that resembles pants. His feet have a distinct shape suited for digitigrade stance with raised heels and only two or three toes. He features slicked-back hair, an intimidating facial expression, and unique ears that flare outward like speakers. His skin is colored blue in color illustrations and reddish-purple in the anime adaptation.

Personality

Youpi has a straightforward and broad-minded personality. Though he struggles with complex strategic planning, he possesses a high level of instinctual intelligence. Because he lacks human memories or a strong self-identity, his loyalty to Meruem is mechanical and free from obsessive attachments. Naturally honest, he never underestimates weaker opponents. As he learns the nuances of Nen during battle, he develops human-like sentiment and genuine respect for his enemies, eventually showing the flexibility to spare their lives. At his core, he possesses a fickle nature characteristic of Transmuters.

Abilities

As a Transmuter, Youpi commands a colossal amount of aura that far exceeds normal combatants. By utilizing his aura to alter his cellular structure, he can rapidly sprout additional arms, tentacles, eyes, or bird-like wings for flight, and can even liquefy his body. He also possesses the ability to convert his rage into destructive power, triggering massive explosions and dramatic transformations. Although initially prone to wild outbursts, he learned to control his anger during combat, eventually mastering his ultimate centaur-like transformation.

Background

Born as the final member of the Royal Guard, Youpi was tasked with stopping the invasion team of Morel, Shoot, and Knuckle. Through his fierce battles, he experienced rapid psychological growth and refined his Nen control, ultimately deciding to spare the surviving hunters out of respect for their courage. He later supported Shaiapouf's decision regarding Komugi to keep the King focused. After Meruem was mortally wounded by the Miniature Rose bomb, Youpi sacrificed most of his own bodily biomass to heal the King, leaving himself shrunken and weakened. He succumbed to the bomb's lethal poison while searching for Komugi.

Relationships

Youpi serves Meruem with pure, unadulterated instinctual loyalty, going so far as to sacrifice most of his physical self to save the King's life. He shares a close bond with fellow guard Shaiapouf, drawing inspiration from Pouf's flight to adapt his own wings and agreeing with Pouf's tactical choices concerning Komugi. Neferpitou is his other fellow Royal Guard. During combat with the Extermination Team—Shoot McMahon, Knuckle Bine, and Morel Mackernasey—Youpi came to respect their resolve and ultimately spared them. He also encountered Welfin shortly before his death.

Trivia

Menthuthuyoupi's name is derived from the Egyptian war god Montu combined with a character from the French children's book series Caroline et ses Amis. Due to his immense physical strength and straightforward personality, he was long presumed by fans to be an Enhancer. However, official design notes revealed at an exhibition by creator Yoshihiro Togashi confirmed that he is actually a pure Transmuter without bias toward Enhancement or Conjuration.
