Overview
Kite is a character from the manga series Hunter x Hunter. He is a licensed contract Hunter and the sole disciple of Ging Freecss. By rescuing a young Gon Freecss and revealing that his father was still alive, Kite served as the primary catalyst for Gon's journey to become a Hunter. Specializing in biological research, he focuses his career on tracking and studying giant beasts and undiscovered species.
Appearance
In his original male form, Kite is characterized by extremely long hair extending down to his thighs, dark eyes, and his signature hat, dressed in long sleeves and trousers. His hair is portrayed as long and white or grey. After his reincarnation as a Chimera Ant, his physical form transforms into that of a young girl with red hair.
Personality
Kite is stoic, rational, and highly disciplined, embodying the qualities of a seasoned professional. Guided by the principle that great Hunters are naturally embraced by animals, he maintains a deep respect for natural wildlife. Although stern and pragmatic on the outside, he possesses a protective, caring nature toward his juniors, selflessly putting himself in harm's way to safeguard others.
Abilities
As a Nen user specializing in Conjuration, Kite can deploy an En reaching a radius of approximately 45 meters. His signature ability, Crazy Slots, manifests a sentient clown roulette that randomly selects a weapon assigned to a number from 1 to 9. A summoned weapon cannot be changed or dismissed until it is used. Revealed forms include weapon number 2, a scythe used for the wide-range sweeping strike Silent Waltz; weapon number 4, a rifle; and weapon number 3, a rod summoned during his confrontation with Neferpitou. Additionally, a special number exists that manifests only when he is fiercely determined to survive.
Background
Having no record of his origins, Kite grew up in a slum before meeting Ging Freecss, who trained him as a Hunter. While pursuing his final assignment to locate Ging, he visited Whale Island and rescued a young Gon Freecss from a Foxbear, telling him about his father's achievements. After completing his trial, Kite formed a research team dedicated to biological studies. He later reunited with Gon in Kakin and led an expedition into NGL to investigate the threat of the Chimera Ants. Ambushed by Neferpitou, he sacrificed his life so Gon and Killua could escape. Though Neferpitou repaired his body with Doctor Blythe to serve as a combat puppet, Kite's soul transferred into the Chimera Ant Queen's final offspring, leading to his reincarnation as a young girl with his memories intact.
Relationships
Kite holds immense respect for his teacher, Ging Freecss, from whom he learned Nen and the Hunter lifestyle. He takes on a protective, senior role toward Ging's son, Gon Freecss, acting as both an inspiration and a guardian. After being slain by Neferpitou, Kite's physical body was repaired by Neferpitou's ability and used as a puppet for combat practice, though his soul ultimately survived through reincarnation.
Trivia
In his reincarnated female form, the character is widely known among fans and credited in official game adaptations under the moniker "Kite-chan." According to production notes displayed at an official Yoshihiro Togashi exhibition, his Nen classification status after rebirth is listed as "vanished," indicating that he may no longer possess his original Conjuration abilities.
