Kokichi Muta

Overview

A character from Jujutsu Kaisen, Kokichi Muta is a second-year student and Semi-Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer at Kyoto Prefectural Jujutsu High School. He operates under the alias Ultimate Mechamaru, piloting a mechanical puppet to act in the physical world. Due to a severe Heavenly Restriction, his real body is frail and immobile, kept hidden in a remote location. In exchange for his extreme physical limitations, he possesses immense cursed energy output and a vast range for his technique, while privately harboring a desperate wish to obtain a normal body and meet his peers face-to-face.

Appearance

Prior to his body's restoration, Kokichi Muta's original physical form lacked a right arm and both legs below the knees, with no feeling below the waist, and his skin was so delicate that even moonlight burned it, leaving him entirely wrapped in bandages. Following the physical repair of his body, he appears with black hair styled in a topknot with M-shaped long bangs, black eyes, and a prominent scar across his left cheek. His proxy puppet, Ultimate Mechamaru, takes the visual appearance of a humanoid robot featuring green eyes.

Personality

Burdened by the crippling conditions of his Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi deeply resented his physical state and was willing to trade away all of his cursed energy in exchange for a healthy body. Although he could come across as harsh or blunt while operating through his puppet, he harbored a deep fondness for his classmates at Kyoto Jujutsu High. He held a tender affection for Kasumi Miwa in particular, driven above all by a simple desire to stand alongside his friends as an equal and see her find true happiness.

Abilities

Through his Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi gains an extensive technique range spanning all of Japan alongside massive cursed energy output, enabling him to store energy over years. Using Puppet Manipulation, he remote-controls mechanical constructs equipped with diverse weaponry, utilizing moves like Blade Release, Thrust Addition, Absolute Thrust, Ultra Cannon, Triple Ultra Cannon, and Peak Mountain Shield. He can pilot the colossal Ultimate Mechamaru Mode Absolute, tapping into seventeen years of stored cursed energy to execute destructive techniques such as Miracle Cannon and Vision Viola. Additionally, by observing Kasumi Miwa, he mastered New Shadow Style: Simple Domain, storing it within special capsules to inject into opponents and neutralize their innate techniques from the inside.

Background

Born to non-sorcerer parents, Kokichi was afflicted with his Heavenly Restriction before birth. He intentionally allowed his parents to believe he was dead before being taken in and educated by Jujutsu High. Desperate for a fully functioning body, he entered a Binding Vow to act as an insider for Pseudo-Geto and Mahito, supplying school intelligence on the strict condition that no harm come to the Kyoto students. After Mahito healed his body via Idle Transfiguration, Kokichi immediately ambushed the curses using Mode Absolute. Although he fought fiercely, he ultimately fell in battle against Mahito. However, he had preemptively prepared three mini-Mechamaru ear-piece puppets configured to activate upon Satoru Gojo's sealing, successfully warning Yuji Itadori's team and conveying his final farewell to Kasumi Miwa.

Relationships

Kokichi harbors deep romantic feelings for his Kyoto classmate Kasumi Miwa, whose presence serves as his primary motivation for seeking a real body; before his essence fades, he uses a mini-Mechamaru to convey his wish for her lifelong happiness. He profoundly values his Kyoto peers, including Aoi Todo, Momo Nishimiya, Noritoshi Kamo, Mai Zen'in, and Arata Nitta, strictly ensuring their immunity from harm in his informant deal. During the exchange event, he forms a mutual understanding with Panda through their intense battle. Conversely, his relationship with Mahito and Pseudo-Geto was a mercenary bargain; the moment Mahito restored Kokichi's body, Kokichi engaged Mahito in a deadly duel.

Trivia

The name Mechamaru was derived from a robot character in a manga Kokichi enjoyed as a child. Creator Gege Akutami conceived the character out of a desire to draw a giant robot, though Akutami noted that Kokichi's fully bandaged appearance unintentionally came to resemble Makoto Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin. The design and battle sequences of Ultimate Mechamaru Mode Absolute feature strong homages to classic mecha animation. Furthermore, reverse-calculation based on his death date and exact duration under Heavenly Restriction indicates that his affliction began while he was still a fetus in the womb.
