Overview

Toji Fushiguro is a major antagonist and supporting character in the manga and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, appearing primarily in the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death arc and the Shibuya Incident arc. Originally born into the Zen'in family, one of the three elite sorcerer clans, he was formerly known as Toji Zen'in before taking his wife's surname. Renowned by epithets such as the Sorcerer Killer and the Heavenly Tyrant, he works as a mercenary assassin and is the biological father of Megumi Fushiguro. Born with a complete Heavenly Restriction that deprives him of all cursed energy in exchange for extraordinary physical abilities, he poses a deadly threat to high-ranking jujutsu sorcerers.

Appearance

Toji Fushiguro has straight black hair and green eyes, with sharp facial features characteristic of the Zen'in bloodline. A noticeable scar rests on the right corner of his mouth, giving him an intimidating facial expression. Standing roughly 185 to 188 centimeters tall, he possesses an exceptionally robust and muscular build resulting from his physical Heavenly Restriction.

Personality

Toji is a cynical, pragmatic mercenary who leads an erratic and hedonistic lifestyle. Passionate about gambling despite his terrible luck, he frequently squanders large earnings quickly and relies on various women as a freeloader. He dislikes alcohol because his enhanced physiology prevents him from getting drunk, but he enjoys eating meat and organ meats. In combat, he is a calculating strategist who avoids unnecessary risks and carefully analyzes his targets. Despite his bitterness toward the Zen'in clan, he retains a subtle, protective affection for his son, Megumi Fushiguro.

Abilities

Through his complete Heavenly Restriction, Toji lacks cursed energy entirely, receiving top-tier physical capabilities and heightened senses in return. This allows him to bypass barrier detection, remain immune to guaranteed-hit domain expansions, track targets via fine senses, and safely digest toxic curses due to reinforced organs. He carries an Inventory Curse—a worm-like creature with a baby face—inside his stomach to store his vast weapon collection without leaking cursed energy. His arsenal includes the Inverted Spear of Heaven, which nullifies active cursed techniques; the Chain of a Thousand Miles, which extends infinitely while unobserved; the Split Soul Katana, which cuts directly at the soul ignoring physical hardness; and Playful Cloud, a three-section staff scaling with the user's physical strength. He also uses conventional firearms and uncursed blades for surprise attacks.

Background

Born into the Zen'in clan, Toji suffered severe mistreatment due to his complete lack of cursed energy, eventually prompting him to abandon the family. He temporarily settled down after marrying Megumi's mother and adopting the Fushiguro surname, but regressed into rogue mercenary work after her death. Recognizing Megumi's inherited technique, he arranged to sell his son to the Zen'in clan to ensure financial security and status for the child. In 2006, he accepted a contract to assassinate Riko Amanai, defeating young Gojo Satoru and Suguru Geto through attrition tactics before being killed by a newly awakened Gojo. During the Shibuya Incident twelve years later, an old medium summoned Toji's physical body via a seance. His dominant physical information overwritten the host soul, temporarily resurrecting him. After defeating the Special Grade Curse Dagon, he confronted Megumi and committed suicide upon confirming his son retained the surname Fushiguro.

Relationships

Toji shares a complex bond with his son, Megumi Fushiguro, secretly seeking to protect his future while maintaining a detached exterior, ultimately entrusting his guardianship to Satoru Gojo. Satoru Gojo was his fierce adversary who ultimately ended Toji's life. During that same assignment, Toji defeated Suguru Geto but deliberately spared him to prevent Geto's absorbed curses from causing havoc. His ties with the Zen'in family are defined by intense bitterness and estrangement, particularly regarding his uncle Naobito Zen'in and brother Jin'ichi Zen'in. While his cousin Naoya Zen'in harbored a fanatical admiration for Toji's physical strength, Toji had no personal contact with his younger cousins, Maki Zen'in and Mai Zen'in.

Trivia

Toji's given name shares its phonetic reading with the Japanese word for the winter solstice, which coincides with the birthday of his son, Megumi Fushiguro. Among fans of the series, he is commonly referred to by the affectionate nickname Papa-guro. Official character notes reveal that during his domestic life, he avoided initiating fights directly to dodge police trouble, instead engaging in physical altercations under the guise of breaking up disputes between others.
