Overview

Clownpiece is a character from the Touhou Project series, introduced as the stage five boss in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom and later featured as a central protagonist in the manga Visionary Fairies in Shrine. She is a Hell fairy who serves the goddess Hecatia Lapislazuli. Empowered by the purified strength of Junko to help paralyze the inhabitants of the Lunar Capital, she eventually relocated to Gensokyo after the incident.

Appearance

She has long blonde hair, reddish-purple eyes, and carries a torch in her left hand. On her head, she wears a purple jester cap decorated with polka dots and three dangling balls, accompanied by a neck ruff. Her jester-inspired clothing incorporates an American flag motif, featuring starry blue patterns and red-and-white stripes arranged symmetrically inverted between her top and tights. She walks barefoot and possesses translucent white fairy wings.

Personality

Energetic, inquisitive, and mischievous, she exhibits a classic playful nature typical of fairies. Having originated in Hell, she loves intense heat and grows increasingly high-spirited as temperatures rise, while severely disliking the cold. Although prone to becoming overly confident when empowered, she values her bonds deeply and stands up for her allies. She speaks in a rough, tomboyish tone interspersed with occasional simple English words.

Abilities

She possesses the ability to drive people mad. By bathing targets in the light of her torch, she can enter their minds and disrupt their sanity. Even among fairies, her raw power is exceptional due to her Hellish origins. During the events of the Lunar invasion, her spirit was purified by Junko's powers, temporarily granting her strength that surpassed even supernatural deities.

Background

Under instructions from Hecatia Lapislazuli, she led a swarm of Hell fairies to the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon. By overwhelming the location with life force, she effectively trapped the purity-obsessed Lunarians inside their capital. Following the conclusion of the crisis, she was permitted to live in Gensokyo, taking up residence in an underground space beneath the Hakurei Shrine.

Relationships

She is intensely loyal to her master, Hecatia Lapislazuli, whom she addresses with high respect, and holds a warm regard for Hecatia's ally Junko. In Gensokyo, she lives under the tolerant supervision of Reimu Hakurei and frequently hangs out with fellow fairies, including Cirno, Eternity Larva, and the Three Fairies of Light.

Trivia

Her concept is inspired by the Lampads, torch-bearing underworld nymphs in Greek mythology who serve Hecate. According to creator commentary, her signature flag-themed attire was adopted after she saw the American flag left behind on the surface of the Moon. In gameplay, her formidable survival spell cards in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom earned her a notorious reputation among players for their extreme difficulty.
