Overview

Watari Nina is a character introduced as the Extra Stage boss in the bullet-hell shooter game Touhou Kinjoukyou ~ Fossilized Wonders. Classified as a Shen—a clam youkai associated with mirages—she originated from a shell fossil located in the Sengan Jouka-zan facility that came to life after absorbing vast amounts of junk data and information originating from the outside world. Blindly accepting these absurd conspiratorial texts as ultimate truths, she weaponizes them as the core of her existence.

Appearance

She has wavy long blonde hair tied in several places with black cords and wears a giant clam hairband. Her eyes are yellow. She wears a white dress accented with rainbow-colored frills and is barefoot. She stands atop a massive seashell, from which a mirage evoking the cityscape of Sumida Ward, Tokyo, billows forth. Her overall pose and gestures mirror classical artwork depicting Venus.

Personality

Having uncritically absorbed vast quantities of unverified data, she behaves as an unyielding conspiracy theorist. She boasts of knowing everything and addresses others with terms like old humanity, seeking to enlighten them with her ultimate truth. Despite her aggressive grandstanding, her temperament stems from a complete lack of early cognitive training, rendering her naive and innocent. When confronted with solid reality that contradicts her accepted truths, she quickly grows flustered and unstable.

Abilities

She possesses the ability to show mirages. Rather than producing harmless illusions, she manifests the conspiracy theories she believes in as real entities, discharging spell cards with tangible, active attack hitboxes. Her repertoire consists entirely of offensive patterns named after famous real-world conspiracy theories.

Background

After waking up inside the pyramid facility from absorbing an overwhelming influx of information, she viewed her acquired knowledge as absolute reality. Upon battling the visiting protagonist, her truths were shattered by the reality of the opponent's existence. Learning that her beliefs were fabrications and that continuing to absorb toxic information would erode her identity as a youkai, she gave up her obsession with secret truths and left for the surface to see the world with her own eyes.

Relationships

Although she came into being within the facility managed by Yuiman Asama and Iwanaga Ariya, she holds no prior direct relationship or deep personal bonds with the main story's bosses. Following their battle, Hakurei Reimu attempts to coax her into placing her faith in the Hakurei Shrine.

Trivia

Her stance and visual presentation reference classical paintings of Venus, notably Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Primavera. Her spell cards derive their names from well-known global conspiracy theories such as the Eye of Providence, chemtrails, and the New World Order.
