Overview
Satono Nishida is a character from the Touhou Project series, introduced as a Stage 5 boss and Extra Stage mid-boss alongside her partner Mai Teireida in Hidden Star in Four Seasons. Known by the title "The All-Too-Dangerous Backup Dancers," she serves as one of the two child servants under the secret god Matara Okina. Bound to her master's will, Satono executes eccentric dances that draw out dormant spiritual energies across Gensokyo.
Appearance
Satono has light brown hair cut into a semi-short style at the back with long waist-length side locks, paired with purple eyes and a round facial structure. She wears a kazaori eboshi hat folded towards the right. Her outfit consists of a magenta dress featuring a white collar, a ribbon-decorated apron, and a bib-like shoulder accent. She is equipped with black thigh-high socks and magenta dance shoes, while holding a myouga plant in her left hand.
Personality
Retaining aspects of her former human self, Satono is cautious by nature, though she possesses a streak of overconfidence. She often serves as the composed counterpart to the impulsive Mai Teireida, exhibiting an airy, elusive demeanor. However, she does not hesitate to deliver harsh and sharp remarks to intruders or those who fail their evaluations. Under the overwhelming influence of Okina Matara's magic, she dances in constant ecstasy solely for her master's sake, lacking any capacity to disobey.
Abilities
Satono possesses the ability to draw out mental energy by dancing behind others, a power granted directly by her master, Okina Matara. As a fraction of Okina's authority over latent potential, Satono's unconventional dancing behind a target stimulates their spiritual energy and elevates their hidden powers to extraordinary levels. A consequential effect of her dance is the creation of mysterious doors upon the backs of those affected.
Background
Originally an ordinary human child, Satono was taken by Okina Matara and transformed into a non-human entity through divine magic. Over years of service, she lost almost all memories of her past life, and her human parents passed away. During the events of Hidden Star in Four Seasons, she carried out her master's orders to open doors on individuals' backs under the belief that they were recruiting new allies, inadvertently causing the Four Seasons Incident. In truth, she was unaware that Okina was testing candidates to replace her and Mai.
Relationships
Okina Matara is Satono's absolute master, who granted her both her powers and the surname "Nishida," demanding complete loyalty. Mai Teireida is her fellow servant and constant partner; together, they act as Okina's dual attendants, with Satono often reining in Mai's rash behavior. Satono also interacted with characters such as Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Shameimaru Aya, Cirno, and Narumi Yatadera when testing their qualifications in the Land of the Backdoor on Okina's orders.
Trivia
Satono's design is inspired by Nishita, one of the two child attendants of the deity Matarajin, which accounts for the myouga plant she carries. The myouga plant traditionally carries lore related to memory loss and numbing effects. Her musical theme is titled Crazy Back Dancers. In gameplay, defeating Satono yields an extra life item (1UP), contrasting with Mai, who drops a bomb item. In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, a recognized programming glitch in Spell Card practice mode causes Satono to become stuck off-screen if Mai is defeated first.
