Overview

Mima is a character featured in the PC-98 era of the Touhou Project series. Debuting as a boss in the Hell route of Touhou Reiiden: Highly Responsive to Prayers, she served as the main antagonist and final boss in Touhou Fumaroku: the Story of Eastern Wonderland, and later became a playable protagonist in both Touhou Yumejiku: Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream and Touhou Kaikidan: Mystic Square. She is a powerful vengeful spirit residing near the Hakurei Shrine, known for her confident and mature presence.

Appearance

Mima has long green hair and green eyes, though her eyes were black in Highly Responsive to Prayers, and turned gold alongside gold hair in Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream's 2P palette. Her lower body is translucent and tapers to a point without feet, though feet appear in her Mystic Square bomb cut-in. She sometimes displays wings or transforms her cape into bat wings. Her standard attire consists of blue decorated clothing with a blue cape and a blue triangular hat bearing a yellow sun. She has also appeared in a white headcloth, a sailor-style outfit with a knife, purple clothes resembling Kirisame Marisa's dress, a blue vest and skirt, or wrapped in a bedsheet. She carries a crescent-moon-shaped staff in Story of Eastern Wonderland, and her hat features a five-pointed star on the cover of Akyu's Untouched Score Vol.4.

Personality

Originally a vengeful spirit consumed by hatred toward humanity, her desire for revenge evaporated over time, leaving her with a lighthearted and easygoing personality. She brazenly considers the human realm her own domain. Characterized by a playful demeanor, she frequently tells casual lies, such as falsely claiming to be human or a local deity. Her speech carries a mature tone, and she thoroughly enjoys teasing Hakurei Reimu as part of her daily routine.

Abilities

Her precise ability is officially listed as unknown. Although her body consists solely of a spiritual mind, she is capable of consuming liquid. In combat, she demonstrates outstanding movement speed and firepower, capable of dealing immense damage via charged shots from a distance as well as overwhelming point-blank damage. She utilizes orb-like projectile spreads and powerful bombs, possessing enough spiritual power to easily break free from Hakurei Reimu's seals.

Background

She first appeared as a boss in the Hell path of Highly Responsive to Prayers. In Story of Eastern Wonderland, she orchestrated an incident aiming to use the power of the Hakurei Shrine's Yin-Yang Orb to exact revenge on humanity. Defeated and sealed by Hakurei Reimu, she quickly broke the seal and began hanging around the shrine to bother Reimu. She later took part in the battles surrounding the ancient ruins in Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, and traveled directly to Makai in Mystic Square to punish the demons encroaching on the human world.

Relationships

Despite their past battles, Mima frequently visits Hakurei Shrine to tease Hakurei Reimu. Reimu's turtle companion, Genjii, addresses her respectfully as 'Mima-dono.' Kirisame Marisa holds deep admiration for her, addressing her as 'Mima-sama'; Mima guides Marisa's training and shares similar magic attacks with her, forming a master-apprentice bond. She defeated Shinki, the god of Makai, and after a hard-fought victory over Alice, acknowledged her strength and took her in as her personal maid.

Trivia

Her name is speculated to originate from the archaic Japanese word 'mimakaru,' denoting the passing of a noble. Although her name matches the Chinese characters used for 'succubus,' no such traits exist in her official characterization. Due to the tapered shape of her translucent lower body, fan art and memes frequently compare her appearance to a fried shrimp. Additionally, an iconic community forum post led to March 9th being recognized by fans as 'Mima Day.' Despite not appearing in the Windows-era main titles, she retains widespread popularity.
