Overview
Patchouli Knowledge is a character from the Touhou Project series, making her debut as a boss in Eastern Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. She is a magician over a century old who resides in the underground library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Known by titles such as the Unmoving Great Library, she spends almost all of her time indoors to protect her books and hair from sunlight, dedicating herself to research, intellectual analysis, and the study of magic.
Appearance
Patchouli features very long, straight purple hair with longer sideburns tied by ribbons, matching purple eyes, and a pale, slender frame. She wears loose-fitting attire reminiscent of nightwear: a light purple outer coat with frilled hems, a garment underneath marked by purple and light purple vertical lines, and a sash hanging forward over her shoulders. Her headwear is a frilled round cap featuring a crescent-shaped ornament. Numerous accent ribbons in colors such as blue and red are attached throughout her dress and hat.
Personality
Patchouli is composed, calm, and reclusive, preferring to spend her days reading and researching inside the library. While she often exhibits an indifferent attitude toward others, she is easily persuaded by those recognized as knowledgeable. Having gained most of her information from literature, she possesses a distinct mindset and personal philosophy. She can sometimes act out of self-interest, but she maintains a dry, pragmatic demeanor rather than a dark temperament, often responding with sharp retorts to the antics of those around her.
Abilities
Patchouli possesses the ability to manipulate magic based on seven elements—Sun, Moon, Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth—primarily employing elemental and spirit magic. Her vast scholarly knowledge gives her extraordinary magic power; however, her physical stamina is exceptionally frail due to her reclusive lifestyle. She also suffers from anemia and asthma, which sometimes interrupts her spell casting.
Background
Having lived for more than a hundred years, Patchouli resides in the subterranean library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion in Gensokyo. She rarely leaves her sunless haven, focusing entirely on expanding her magical expertise through texts and rituals. During events such as the Scarlet Mist Incident, she stands as one of the mansion's primary defenders, and she subsequently appears as a support character, playable combatant, and knowledgeable advisor in various incidents.
Relationships
She shares a long-standing friendship with Remilia Scarlet, the head of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Within the mansion, she interacts with Remilia's sister Flandre Scarlet, head maid Sakuya Izayoi, gatekeeper Hong Meiling, and her assistant Koakuma. She maintains a complicated relationship with Marisa Kirisame, who constantly takes books from the library without permission, though they eventually become acquainted. She is also acquainted with fellow magician Alice Margatroid.
Trivia
Her name is derived from patchouli, an aromatic herb known for its earthy fragrance, fitting the somber, sunless atmosphere of her subterranean library. She is commonly referred to by fans by shortened forms of her name, such as Patchy.
