Overview

Gengetsu is a character from the fourth Touhou Project entry, Touhou Gensoukyou ~ Lotus Land Story. Serving as the second Extra Stage boss following her twin sister Mugetsu, she is a powerful demon who acts as the co-ruler and true master of the mysterious Dream World.

Appearance

She features medium-length straight blonde hair decorated with a red bow on top, paired with yellow eyes. Her outfit consists of a light pink dress with puffy long sleeves, a red bowtie at the collar, and a dark red vest. On her back are white feathered angel wings, which dim or grow transparent when she is unhappy and radiate a navy aura when enraged.

Personality

Unlike her hot-tempered sister, Gengetsu possesses a serious, straightforward demeanor and speaks without contempt. While pragmatic in assessing battle situations, she also displays a somewhat airheaded side, engaging the protagonist simply because her sister asked her to without fully questioning the intruder's motives.

Abilities

As a formidable demon, she commands immense magical strength, firing reflective shots, spread bullets, and giant laser beams. When targeted by bombs, she deploys a circular barrier reminiscent of a paraselenic ring to negate all damage. Prolonged encounters cause her bullet patterns to enter a frenzy phase, flooding the screen with ultra-fast, complex omnidirectional spreads.

Background

Residing in the isolated Dream World alongside her twin sister Mugetsu, Gengetsu steps into conflict after human intruders breach her realm. Following Mugetsu's defeat in battle, Gengetsu emerges to challenge the protagonist directly, serving as the final obstacle of the Extra Stage.

Relationships

Mugetsu is her younger twin sister and co-ruler of the Dream World, whose defeat prompts Gengetsu to intervene. In fan discussions and related material, she is often connected with Yuuka due to their shared presence as top-tier bosses in Touhou Gensoukyou.

Trivia

Her name refers to paraselene, an atmospheric optical phenomenon where a mock moon appears alongside the actual moon. ZUN notably labeled her theme song and encounter as representing the ultimate form of a brutal boss, with her frantic final patterns widely recognized for their legendary difficulty.
