Overview
Wriggle Nightbug is a character from the Touhou Project series, making her debut as the Stage 1 boss in Touhou Imperishable Night ~ Imperishable Night. As a firefly youkai residing in places such as grassy fields, she acts as a leader among insects. Known by titles like the "Bug of Light Wriggling in the Dark," she steps forward to confront the protagonists during the game's events. While taking on the form of a human child, she represents the presence of insect youkai in Gensokyo.
Appearance
Wriggle Nightbug has the physique of a human child with short green hair and green or blue eyes, alongside a pair of thin insect antennae on her head. She wears a collared white shirt and loose blue shorts. On her back, she wears a split-tail cape shaped like beetle wings, featuring a black exterior and a red interior. Her footwear consists of white socks paired with red or brown shoes. Her overall boyish style gives her an androgynous look.
Personality
Wriggle possesses an arrogant and self-centered demeanor, often boasting of her status to intimidate others. Despite her bluster, her lighthearted and innocent nature means she is rarely taken seriously. She displays a distinct aversion to both cold weather and chemical insecticides. Her youthful and simple-minded personality makes her naturally inclined to play and interact lively with nearby balance-minded youkai.
Abilities
She possesses the ability to manipulate insects. This capacity allows her to command mass swarms, coordinating complex behaviors like synchronized glowing in fireflies. While not particularly formidable individually, she can summon microscopic chigger mites when pushed to her limits, inflicting severe fevers on humans. Her insect allies remain highly vulnerable to area attacks like fire, smoke, cold environments, and chemical insecticides.
Background
Insect youkai were historically feared alongside powerful entities, but their influence has waned considerably over time. Because fireflies are fondly regarded by humans, Wriggle managed to manifest as a youkai taking the shape of a young child. In Imperishable Night, she attempted to stop the protagonists from resolving the night incident, only to be promptly defeated. She continues her daily existence in the fields of Gensokyo, occasionally appearing in various chronicled events and local happenings.
Relationships
She maintains close ties with Cirno, Rumia, and Mystia Lorelei, frequently depicted alongside them in fan works and secondary material. Additionally, she is often paired with Kazami Yuuka in creative adaptations due to the natural thematic connection between flowers and insects.
Trivia
Her first name "Wriggle" references wriggling movement, while "Nightbug" refers directly to nocturnal insects like fireflies. A specific gameplay pattern in Imperishable Night where she suddenly descends from the top of the screen led players to coin the phrase "Wriggle Kick." Additionally, her dark cape and prominent antennae have led fans to playfully nickname her "G" after the Japanese initial for cockroach.
