Overview

Morichika Rinnosuke is a character in the Touhou Project series and the protagonist of the novel Curiosities of Lotus Asia. He is a half-human, half-youkai who runs an antique shop named Kourindou near the entrance of the Forest of Magic. As one of the extremely rare named male characters with a distinct visual design in the franchise, he sells relics from the Outside World and vintage items from Gensokyo. Highly knowledgeable yet quiet and introspective, he approaches his business more as a personal passion and collection hobby than a commercial trade.

Appearance

He has short white or silver hair with a single sticking-out strand at the top, and golden eyes framed by half-rim glasses with black lower borders. His unique attire blends Western and traditional Japanese elements in an asymmetrical black and blue color scheme, accompanied by a black choker around his neck.

Personality

Gentle, reserved, and fond of solitude, Rinnosuke enjoys quiet contemplation and deep reflection. He takes pride in his vast store of knowledge, though his reasoning often relies on mystical and magical interpretations rather than sound scientific logic. He can be stubborn and dogmatic about his own deductions. Driven by strong collector instincts, he frequently keeps useful or rare items as non-saleable personal stock. As a half-youkai who requires no food to survive, he operates his shop largely as a pastime without much regard for profit.

Abilities

He possesses the ability to instantly discern the name and intended purpose of any item he sees by reading its inherent memories, though he cannot divine how to actually operate it. Aside from this ability, he is a remarkably skilled craftsman and alchemist, capable of working with legendary metals, synthesizing conceptual properties, and creating powerful magical items.

Background

Having lived since before the creation of the Hakurei Border, Rinnosuke previously apprenticed at the Kirisame shop in the Human Village. Realizing his special traits were ill-suited for a standard store, he struck out on his own to open Kourindou, gathering forgotten goods and artifacts from areas like Muenzuka. Thanks to his half-youkai nature, he does not age and is immune to both human and youkai illnesses.

Relationships

He shares a long-standing friendship with Kirisame Marisa, whom he has known since her childhood, crafting her signature Mini-Hakkero and shaping her interest in magical research and collecting. Hakurei Reimu is another frequent visitor for whom he crafts tools and garments. He also receives visits from customers such as Usami Sumireko, Izayoi Sakuya, Konpaku Youmu, and Nazrin, while feeling uncomfortable around Yakumo Yukari due to her perceptive nature.

Trivia

His family name Morichika translates to 'near the forest,' while 'Rin' refers to long-lasting rain and represents the water element. The shop name Kourindou incorporates subtle wordplay hinting at shrines and the sanctuary at the heart of Gensokyo. Due to his calm demeanor and distinctive characterization, fans often view him as reflecting the creator ZUN's own personal ideals.
