Letty Whiterock is a character from the Touhou Project series, making her debut as the Stage 1 boss in Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom. Identified as a category of yuki-onna, she is a seasonal youkai who manifests exclusively during the winter months and disappears into hiding once spring arrives. Known by titles such as the Leftover of Winter, she represents the chill of the snowy season, taking simple pleasure in the cold weather and accepting the natural progression of the seasons.

Appearance

She has short bob hair in a pale purple or soft blue hue, paired with eyes of a matching purple shade. Around her head, she wears a white turban-like cloth, alongside a white scarf wrapped around her neck. Her outfit consists of loose-fitting clothing featuring a long skirt overlaid with an apron-like garment. Running from her neck to her waist along the left side of her chest is a white line, adorned with a spear-shaped brooch with four-directional arrows resembling the alchemical symbol for silver. She is relatively tall and physically slender in official illustrations, though her hit box in the game spreads wide horizontally.

Personality

Letty possesses an easygoing, gentle, and unhurried personality, moving entirely at her own comfortable pace. She is forgiving and does not harbor bitterness even after being defeated in combat. She enjoys lighthearted humor, playfully pretending to be the mastermind behind incidents when approached by those searching for answers. However, she maintains strong pride as a youkai, disliking any comparison or association with lower-tier entities such as fairies despite any apparent similarities in their cold-based powers. During seasons other than winter, she spends much of her time resting quietly away from sunlight.

Abilities

Letty possesses the ability to manipulate chilliness. This power is equivalent to commanding the natural environment of winter itself. Unlike fairies who handle localized cold air, her power is tied to the season, making her exceptionally formidable during cold winter conditions, though she becomes nearly powerless during other times of the year. In battles, she utilizes spell cards themed around extreme cold and winter, including Cold Sign Lingering Cold, Winter Sign Flower Wither Away, and Cold Sign Cold Snap.

Background

During the events of Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom., Letty was simply enjoying the unnaturally prolonged winter when she encountered the protagonists trying to restore spring. She had no involvement in causing the incident itself and accepted the transition of seasons as a natural process. Later documented in Touhou Bunkacho ~ Shoot the Bullet., she was targeted during a traditional spring-welcoming ritual, where she was attacked without personal fault merely for representing the lingering cold. Records compiled by Hieda no Akyuu categorize her as a variant of yuki-onna who retreats to shady areas once temperatures rise.

Relationships

Although frequently associated with the ice fairy Cirno due to their shared cold-based powers, Letty explicitly resists being lumped together with fairies, viewing them as minor natural anomalies compared to a proper youkai like herself. During her encounter with Izayoi Sakuya, she acted playful by falsely claiming to be the mastermind behind the long winter. Additionally, in an interview conducted by Shameimaru Aya, it was implied that the red-and-white human who ambushed her during the spring-welcoming ritual was Hakurei Reimu.

Trivia

Her name is derived from Letitia Letty Blackrock, a character in Agatha Christie's detective novel A Murder Is Announced. Due to her hit box being surprisingly wide in her debut game, a popular secondary creation joke emerged portraying her with a chubby figure despite her slender official design. Fans sometimes refer to her by the direct Japanese translation of her surname, Shiroiwa-san. She is also frequently featured alongside Lily White, the Aki sisters, and Kazami Yuuka to represent the four seasons of Gensokyo.
