Overview

Soga no Tojiko is a character from the Touhou Project series created by Team Shanghai Alice, debuting as the Stage 5 midboss of Touhou Shinreibyou ~ Ten Desires. She is the spirit of a noble from the ancient Soga clan of Japan, serving as a loyal follower and disciple to Toyosatomimi no Miko alongside Mononobe no Futo. Following her master's resurrection, she resides in the Great Mausoleum located within the Senkai.

Appearance

Tojiko has short, wavy green hair styled in a bob and matching green eyes. She wears a black or dark green tate-eboshi crown hat featuring attached ribbons and a blue-and-white paper talisman stuck to its side. Her outfit consists of a dark green long-sleeved dress with a high white turtleneck collar and white ruffles at the sleeve cuffs. The chest features two sets of crossed string-and-button closures, while numerous blue-and-white talismans line the skirt's hemline. In place of human legs, two ghostly tails extend from beneath her long dress.

Personality

Tojiko speaks coarsely and has a quick temper, yet she is fundamentally soft-hearted and caring. She exhibits a reliable, elder-sisterly demeanor, though provoking her anger can trigger literal lightning strikes. While she once retained the intense malice typical of a vengeful spirit, her grudges have largely faded over time. Despite losing her physical body due to past circumstances, she considers her indestructible spiritual form far more convenient than a fragile human body and feels completely satisfied with her present state.

Abilities

Tojiko possesses the ability to cause lightning. She can summon electrical strikes in her immediate surroundings, with the scale of the bolts corresponding to the intensity of her anger. As a high-ranking spirit, her power generates actual damaging lightning strikes rather than mere thunderous sounds. In combat, her danmaku attacks consist primarily of arrow-shaped bullets arranged to form lightning bolts and cyclones, as demonstrated in her spell card Lightning Arrow "Gagouji Cyclone".

Background

Hailing from the influential Soga clan of ancient Japan, Tojiko participated in the historical conflict against the Mononobe clan over the adoption of Buddhism around 1,400 years ago. To aid Toyosatomimi no Miko, she attempted the Taoist ritual of becoming a shikaisen alongside Mononobe no Futo, intending to shed her physical body and transfer her soul into a durable vessel until the time of resurrection. However, Futo secretly replaced Tojiko's chosen jar with an unbaked raw clay vessel, which quickly decayed and left Tojiko without a body, forcing her to resurrect as a ghost. Upon the eventual awakening of Miko and Futo, she joined them in Gensokyo.

Relationships

Tojiko serves Toyosatomimi no Miko as her master and leader, holding deep respect for her guidance as a disciple. Her relationship with Mononobe no Futo is complicated by ancient clan rivalries and Futo's past trickery regarding her resurrection vessel; despite this, the two maintain a close, mutually supportive partnership in the present day. She is also acquainted with Kaku Seiga, who provided the Taoist techniques used for their group's revival.

Trivia

Her character motif is derived from Tojiko no Iratsume, a historical figure who was a daughter of Soga no Umako and a consort of Prince Shoutoku. Notably, she is the first ghost character in the Windows-era Touhou Project games depicted without human legs, floating on ghostly tails instead. Her energetic battle exclamation when summoned during Miko's spell card "Gouzoku Ranbu" has become her most famous iconic line in fan works.
