Overview
Merlin Prismriver is a poltergeist appearing in the Touhou Project series, introduced in Perfect Cherry Blossom. She is the middle sister of the Prismriver Sisters and performs as the brass musician of their ensemble, mainly playing the trumpet. Occupying the central position during live performances, her radiant presence and overwhelmingly cheerful demeanor make her an unmistakable centerpiece of the group.
Appearance
She features wavy light blue hair styled asymmetrically, left falling to shoulder length on the right side while bound upward at the back on the left. She has blue eyes and is the tallest among the three sisters. Her outfit consists of a light pink shirt, a matching vest with blue buttons, and a light pink flared skirt, all trimmed with frills and black accent lines. Blue symbols resembling connected vision chart marks ornament her vest and skirt hem. She wears a cone-shaped pink hat topped with a blue sphere surrounded by cylindrical rods, and she is accompanied by a golden trumpet.
Personality
Merlin is defined by an unfailingly optimistic, cheerful disposition and a total tolerance against despondency. Highly friendly toward humans and spirits alike, she nevertheless possesses manic tendencies that occasionally elevate her mood to extreme highs. During these intense bursts of energy, her speech can become eccentric or erratic, making one-on-one communication tricky. She holds great respect for her elder sister Lunasa Prismriver while treating her younger sister Lyrica Prismriver with a mixture of playful teasing and protective care.
Abilities
Her capabilities include the ability to play musical instruments without using her hands or feet, alongside the power to perform manic music. Through telekinetic poltergeist force, she operates brass instruments without physical contact, producing rich brass harmonies single-handedly. The sound produced by her trumpet directly affects listeners' mental states, swelling their excitement to extreme levels and compelling them to dance or lose coherence in conversation.
Background
Merlin originated as a poltergeist created by Layla Prismriver, the youngest daughter of a human noble family. When the family mansion was abandoned, Layla manifested spiritual duplicates of her three older sisters to keep her company, which evolved over time into independent poltergeist musicians. Based in a ruined mansion near the Mist Lake, Merlin travels across Gensokyo to perform at festivals, banquets, and major venues such as the Netherworld's Hakugyokurou mansion.
Relationships
She maintains strong bonds with her elder sister Lunasa Prismriver, who serves as the leader of the Prismriver Ensemble, and her younger sister Lyrica Prismriver, whom she fondly looks out for. Layla Prismriver is the human origin who brought her into existence. In later events, the trio expands their musical group alongside drum tsukumogami Horikawa Raiko, continuing their musical endeavors under a reformed ensemble name.
Trivia
The sun-like ornament crowning her hat forms a celestial motif together with Lunasa's crescent moon and Lyrica's star. Her name references the legendary wizard Merlin from Arthurian lore, while Prismriver evokes the dispersion of light through prisms and sacred rivers. Additionally, her unique asymmetrical hairstyle inspired the widely recognized Shift_JIS emoticon ξ･∀･), which generated her popular fan nickname Merupo.
