Overview

Eternity Larva is a character from the Touhou Project series, debuting as the Stage 1 boss in Hidden Star in Four Seasons. As a swallowtail butterfly fairy, she embodies the biological concepts of insect growth, rebirth, and metamorphosis. Although generally gentle and peaceful, she experienced a surge of power during the seasonal incident that temporarily drove her into a hyperactive state. Beyond her nature as an ordinary fairy, subtle hints suggest she may possess connections to an ancient deity known as Tokoyo Kami.

Appearance

Eternity Larva features short aqua hair and orange-brown eyes. Atop her head are leafy crowns alongside a pair of larval swallowtail antennae. She wears a short-sleeved green dress designed to evoke the three stages of insect metamorphosis—caterpillar, pupa, and adult. A pair of butterfly wings extends from her back, and she goes barefoot. In her official artwork, she is portrayed with her arms stretched outwards.

Personality

By nature, Eternity Larva is peaceful and relaxed, taking little interest in serious combat. When encountering fights, she usually views them as playful gatherings to attend with power-up items. However, during the seasonal crisis, a swell of life energy pushed her into an excited state, leading her to make grandiose declarations. Despite these boastful moments, she retains a simple and friendly fairy mindset. She favors sunlit, warm environments and strongly dislikes cold or windy weather, preferring to spend winters indoor at a decorated retreat in the Forest of Magic.

Abilities

Her designated capability is the ability to scatter scales. When sensing danger, she activates a defense mechanism, firing danmaku and releasing a pungent odor directly from her antennae to repel threats. In battle, her spell cards focus on themes of butterfly scales and summer breezes, and she fires butterfly-shaped projectiles in specific titles. In Touhou Sangetsusei, she demonstrated extraordinary power by harnessing Clownpiece's magical torch to alter winter weather into summer heat and sprout massive palm trees.

Background

Eternity Larva is a butterfly fairy who primarily inhabits the sunny Garden of the Sun in Gensokyo. During the Four Seasons incident, she experienced a massive influx of life force caused by the secret god's power, driving her into a temporary wild rampage alongside other fairies. During this event, she encountered Reimu Hakurei and offered her assistance in resolving the crisis. Following the incident, Matara Okina posited that Eternity Larva might actually be the incarnation of Tokoyo Kami, an ancient deity worshipped in human history in the form of a swallowtail caterpillar.

Relationships

She shares a close friendship with Cirno, engaging in playful competition over leadership while encouraging one another. Her relationship with Matara Okina involves underlying historical tension, as Okina recognizes her potential identity as an ancient opposing deity. She bonded with Clownpiece during a shrine festival, leveraging Clownpiece's torch to alter the winter environment. She also maintains friendly relations with the Three Fairies of Light, including Star Sapphire, as well as Daiyousei.

Trivia

Her name translates to 'eternal larva,' reflecting the infinite rebirth of fairies alongside the developmental stages of insects. During early development, ZUN initially considered naming her 'Larva,' but modified it to prevent her from sounding like an overly powerful boss. Her connection to Tokoyo Kami draws from a historical cult recorded in the Nihon Shoki, in which people worshipped swallowtail caterpillars on citrus trees as deities of longevity. Among fans, her name is frequently linked with the number eight due to wordplay.
