Overview
Toramaru Shou is a character from the Touhou Project series, making her debut as the Stage 5 boss in Touhou Seirensen ~ Undefined Fantastic Object. Serving as the primary disciple and avatar of the war god Bishamonten, she holds a high-ranking position at Myouren Temple, second only to Hijiri Byakuren. Originally a tiger youkai born from human imagination, she was chosen to collect faith on Bishamonten's behalf and now acts as a key figure in managing the temple.
Appearance
Shou features short, wavy hair dyed in a two-tone blend of blonde and black, accompanied by golden eyes and a lotus-shaped ornament on her head. She wears a dark red garment with a tiger-print waist skirt over a white shirt with long, wide sleeves, paired with pants and black cloth shoes. A white floating ring is positioned behind her back. In her hands, she holds Bishamonten's jeweled pagoda in her right hand and a long spear—used as a staff to maintain dignity—in her left hand.
Personality
On the surface, Shou maintains a gentle, calm, and authoritative demeanor suitable for a divine proxy. However, around close companions, her true personality emerges as highly emotional and passionate, occasionally becoming hot-headed. Despite residing in a Buddhist temple, she is also known to enjoy drinking alcohol and possesses a strong tolerance for drink.
Abilities
Shou possesses the ability to attract treasures, bringing good fortune and wealth to those who worship her. Her primary power in battle relies heavily on Bishamonten's Pagoda, which converts the radiance of gathered gems into high-output laser beams that scorch everything in their path. Although roughly eighty percent of her combat strength comes from the pagoda, she is also capable of wielding her long spear in physical combat.
Background
Originally a tiger beast spawned from human fears, Shou was recommended by Hijiri Byakuren to act as a stand-in for Bishamonten when the deity was too busy to visit the temple. When Byakuren was sealed away in Makai, Shou initially hid her youkai identity to protect her position, which left her with deeply felt regret. Centuries later, when the means to break the seal became available, she rallied allies like Murasa Minamitsu to successfully rescue Byakuren.
Relationships
She shares a complex mutual relationship with Hijiri Byakuren, who worships Bishamonten through Shou while Shou acts as Byakuren's devoted monk disciple. Nazrin serves as her mouse familiar, though Nazrin was originally appointed by Bishamonten to monitor Shou. She also maintains close bonds with temple companions like Murasa Minamitsu and Kumoi Ichirin, who helped her unseal Byakuren.
Trivia
Her tiger design and name originate from the historical ties between Bishamonten and Shigisan Chōgosonshi-ji temple, linked to Prince Shōtoku's legend of praying during the year, day, and hour of the Tiger. In fan works, she is famously portrayed as a clumsy airhead who frequently misplaces her irreplaceable pagoda.
