Overview
Meira is a character who appears as the Stage 2 boss in Touhou Fuumaroku ~ the Story of Eastern Wonderland. Bearing the title of Samurai, she is a female warrior who seeks to acquire the power of the Hakurei. Due to her masculine demeanor and androgynous name, she is easily mistaken for a man. In the story, she serves as a straight-laced foil to Hakurei Reimu, getting completely dragged along by the shrine maiden's unpredictable behavior.
Appearance
Meira has long purple hair bound into a ponytail. Her eyes are depicted as either purple or red. She wears traditional Japanese attire featuring a red-and-white color scheme similar to Hakurei Reimu's, consisting of a kimono paired with a kataginu and hakama. She carries a long Japanese katana in her hand.
Personality
Meira possesses a serious and earnest personality fitting for a samurai. She is a long-suffering individual who cannot ignore nonsense, constantly pointing out the flaws in Hakurei Reimu's bizarre responses during their confrontation. Though she carries herself as a stern warrior, she shows a flustered and highly expressive side when her gender or intentions are misunderstood.
Abilities
In combat, Meira moves around fluidly and unpredictably while executing attacks. She swings her katana to unleash flashes of blade light, which transform into dense danmaku projectiles. Her attack style involves spreading complex bullet patterns both vertically and horizontally across the battlefield.
Background
Driven by an ambition to claim the Hakurei power for herself, Meira challenged Hakurei Reimu to a battle. However, her declaration regarding the prize of victory was disastrously misinterpreted by Reimu as a marriage proposal, which Reimu willingly accepted. Although Meira frantically clarified that she was female and only wanted her power, she was defeated in combat. Rendered temporarily immobile, she barely managed to flee after Reimu casually contemplated burying her alive.
Relationships
Meira stands as a rival to Hakurei Reimu, having confronted her to steal the Hakurei power. Their encounter was marked by Reimu mistaking her for a male suitor, though Meira notably remains one of the very few individuals Reimu addresses with an honorific. She shares a common ambition with Mima in targeting the Hakurei power. During their battle, Reimu's companion Genjii was also present.
Trivia
Her battle theme is Yami no Chikara (Power of Darkness). Her name is speculated to originate from Meira-sonja, the 148th of the Five Hundred Arhats in Buddhist tradition. Due to her traditional attire and katana, fans sometimes confuse her design with Kongara, another sword-wielding character from the PC-98 era. Additionally, fan gatherings celebrate August 3rd as Meira Day based on a Japanese numerical pun on her theme song's title.
