Konngara is a boss character featured in the first installment of the Touhou Project, Highly Responsive to Prayers. However, within the fan community, Konngara is predominantly depicted as female while maintaining an enigmatic and dignified presence.
Appearance
The character features black hair gathered into a single ponytail with a red ribbon, alongside vivid red eyes. A sharp, red, horn-like spike protrudes from the forehead, giving the impression of bleeding. Outfit details include a red vestment with white border trimming, layered over inner garments with gray sleeves. Konngara holds a sword in the left hand and a shallow sake dish in the right hand. Lacking physical legs, the lower body tapers into an ethereal mist. Flaming fire motifs and Sanskrit characters hover directly behind the figure.
Personality
Due to the complete absence of in-game dialogue or narrative prose, Konngara's exact demeanor is not expressed through spoken words. Nevertheless, the character stands out as the sole adversary in Highly Responsive to Prayers whose portrait expression shifts during combat. Displaying a stern, wrathful scowl that mirrors the fierce countenance of the deity Fudou Myouou, Konngara conveys an aura of stoic intensity, solemnity, and unyielding authority.
Abilities
Konngara functions as a formidable sword-wielding adversary, utilizing the blade held in the left hand alongside complex bullet patterns. Even while engaged in intense battle, the character holds a sake dish in the right hand without compromising combat readiness. Floating effortlessly via a misty lower body, Konngara unleashes high-density Danmaku attacks backed by spectral fire and Sanskrit sigils to challenge invaders at the end of the Hell route.
Background
Konngara debuted as the final obstacle of the Hell route in Highly Responsive to Prayers, the inaugural PC-98 title of the Touhou Project. Positioned at Stage 20 within the depth of Hell—often associated with the Silent Temple—the character waits as the ultimate confrontation for players traversing this path. Because the original game did not incorporate narrative cutscenes, ending texts, or profile documentation for its boss roster, the backstory explaining Konngara's origin and martial duty remains completely unrecorded in canon.
Relationships
Konngara is closely linked with Sariel, who serves as the counterpart final boss for the Makai route in Highly Responsive to Prayers. Within the Hell route itself, Kikuri stands as a preceding major boss on Stage 15. In fan works, strong parallels are drawn with Hoshiguma Yuugi due to shared iconic traits such as a single forehead horn, carrying a sake cup, and ties to oni lore. Additionally, Konngara is frequently paired with Meira as fellow traditional Japanese-style swordswomen from the PC-98 era.
Trivia
The character's name derives from Konngara-douji, the seventh attendant of the Buddhist deity Fudou Myouou, as well as the astronomical numeral representing 10 to the power of 112. Konngara's battle theme is Swordsman of a Distant Star (Astral Knight), which was listed as Angel of a Distant Star in later music archives. A unique glitch occurs in game: pausing and unpausing during the boss fight permanently changes the palette of both the background and sprite from red to green. Fan celebrations mark July 28th as Konngara Day based on Buddhist ritual calendar dates.
