Overview

Luna Child is a character from the Touhou Project series, appearing as a prominent figure in the official Touhou Sangetsusei manga series as one of the Light Three Fairies alongside Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire. Representing the quiet light of the moon, she is a small fairy who engages in playful antics with her companions. Known for her ability to erase ambient sounds, she serves as a boss opponent in Fairy Wars ~ Touhou Sangetsusei and makes appearances across numerous official games and books.

Appearance

Luna Child is a short fairy with pale flaxen-blonde hair styled in vertical drill rolls, half-closed red eyes, and a chestnut-shaped mouth. She wears a white hat decorated with a black bow and a long-sleeved white dress. Attached to her back are upward-curving wings shaped like crescent moons, completing an overall moon-themed visual design.

Personality

While mischievous and youthful like typical fairies, Luna Child is more cautious than her peers and often plays the straight-man role in their trio. She possesses intense intellectual curiosity, enjoying books and newspapers and occasionally wearing reading glasses. Her personal tastes are somewhat unusual for a fairy, including a preference for bitter flavors like coffee beans and fukinotou miso, as well as decorating her room with dolls and plush toys. Despite trying to be careful, her extreme clumsiness often causes her to trip over her own feet.

Abilities

Luna Child possesses the ability to mute surrounding sounds. This skill is highly effective for hiding, pranking, and escaping, and she can manipulate it with precision to silence ambient noise while leaving her companions' voices audible. However, turning a naturally noisy area completely silent can unnaturally betray her location. During solo thefts, she insists on operating in absolute silence, but her heavy reliance on sound erasure, combined with her habit of acting as the rearguard and her tendency to trip while running, frequently results in her getting caught or left behind.

Background

Luna Child originally lived in a hollow of a large tree near the Forest of Magic alongside Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire. The trio frequently plotted prank attempts against humans and the Hakurei Shrine, leading to frequent mishaps. Later, the three fairies relocated their residence to another large tree situated directly behind the Hakurei Shrine, continuing their daily adventures from their new home. Her characteristics and low threat level are also documented in chronicled records by Hieda no Akyu.

Relationships

Luna Child lives and acts alongside Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire as part of the Light Three Fairies. Though she often acts as the voice of reason regarding Sunny Milk's reckless ideas, the trio remains inseparable. Additionally, Yakumo Yukari once noted that Luna Child is the fairy closest to a youkai, while her clumsy missteps during solo pranks often lead to comparisons with Cirno's level of simplicity.

Trivia

To prevent confusion with Lunasa Prismriver, fans frequently refer to her by the nickname "Lunacha." The distinct shape of her mouth drawn by manga artist Makoto Hirasaka inspired a well-known fan phrase describing her chestnut-shaped mouth. Furthermore, because of her sound-erasing powers, fan communities selected December 6th—Japan's official Sound Day—as her dedicated character day.
