Overview
Matara Okina is a character from the Touhou Project series, introduced in the sixteenth mainline installment, Hidden Star in Four Seasons, where she serves as both the Stage 6 and Extra Stage boss. Recognized as one of the legendary Sages who created Gensokyo alongside figures such as Yakumo Yukari, she is a secret deity residing in the Land of the Back Door. From her realm, she works to maintain the balance of life and mental energy across the land while safeguarding it from external threats.
Appearance
Matara Okina features long blonde hair with front strands between her eyes, paired with yellow eyes. She wears a three-pointed Chinese-style cloth crown, an orange tabard-like garment decorated with a constellation print of the Big Dipper, a white shirt, a green skirt, and long boots. Her outfit includes wide, long sleeves that appear loose or detached. During her initial Stage 6 appearance, she fights seated on a chair framed by a four-colored aura with a small hand-drum floating nearby. In the Extra Stage, she stands before an open back-door, while certain manga adaptations portray her sitting in a wheelchair.
Personality
On the surface, Matara Okina projects an arrogant, supremely confident persona fitting for a high-ranking deity. Despite her stern demeanour and harsh treatment of subordinates, she possesses a surprisingly frank, warmhearted, and at times childlike nature. She enjoys showing off her absolute presence and occasionally drops her formal composure during defeat. Driven by a deep commitment to Gensokyo, she does not hesitate to stage engineered incidents or create controlled crises to evaluate and maintain the stability of the realm.
Abilities
Matara Okina possesses the ability to create doors on the back of anything. This power allows her to open spatial portals anywhere within Gensokyo, grant mobility to her allies, and manipulate or drain the vital and mental energy of others without their awareness. Her authority also extends to bestowing entirely new powers upon individuals.
Background
Although publicly associated with numerous divine facets—including as a goddess of the Earth, performing arts, stars, sericulture, hindrances, and outcast peoples—her absolute true identity remains unknown. In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, she engineered a seasonal crisis under the guise of finding replacement servants, though her true goal was to reassert her forgotten presence among Gensokyo's inhabitants. In Touhou Gouyoku Ibun, she deliberately manipulated the emergence of petroleum to neutralize a looming threat and retain administrative control over the underground resources.
Relationships
She acts as the master to her two main servants, Teireida Mai and Nishida Satono, whom she employs for daily tasks and energy maintenance. As a fellow Sage of Gensokyo, she shares a longstanding acquaintance with Yakumo Yukari and Ibaraki Kasen. She maintains hostile relations with Eternity Larva as well as tengu figures such as Shameimaru Aya, Inubashiri Momiji, Himekaidou Hatate, and Iizunamaru Megumu. She is also connected to Komano Aunn as her creator, and she manipulated Flandre Scarlet into taking down Toutetsu Yuma.
Trivia
Her design and lore heavily draw from Matarajin, a deity worshipped in the Tendai school of Japanese Buddhism associated with Noh theater and star worship, with her name referencing Oki Province. Her official theme tracks include 'Secret God Matara ~ Hidden Star in All Seasons.' and 'The Concealed Four Seasons'. Due to the phonetic resemblance of her name, fans frequently nickname her 'Motorola'.
