Overview

Usami Sumireko is a character from the Touhou Project series, debuting as the final boss of Touhou Shinpiroku ~ Urban Legend in Limbo and serving as the protagonist of Violet Detector. She is a high school student from the Outside World attending Higashifukami High School and the self-proclaimed first president of the Secret Sealing Club. Possessing genuine psychic powers and an intense fascination with the occult and otherworldly dimensions, she instigated an incident involving Occult Balls to breach the Great Hakurei Barrier, which ultimately granted her the ability to visit Gensokyo through her dreams.

Appearance

Sumireko has brown wavy hair worn in low twintails and brown eyes. She wears red under-rim glasses and a black hat decorated with a white bow, closely resembling the headwear of Usami Renko. Her outfit consists of a white long-sleeved shirt paired with a purple-and-white plaid vest and pleated skirt, complemented by a loop tie featuring an airplane-shaped clasp reminiscent of the Quimbaya airplane. Over this, she sports a black high-collar cape with a red lining inscribed with moving runes. She wears white knee-high socks adorned with bow garters, dark brown loafers, and gloves. Her accessories include Zener cards, a crystal ball, a skull, a black tablet marked with a golden hexagram, and a smartphone.

Personality

Sumireko is highly intelligent, arrogant, and harbors a sense of superiority, viewing herself as an extraordinary psychic distinct from normal humans. Holding a strong chuunibyou mindset and modern cynical tendencies, she spent years deliberately shunned social circles under the belief that seeking friendship was a weak dependency. Her obsessive curiosity regarding the occult and parallel worlds drives her to perform dangerous, extreme experiments. Despite her haughty attitude, she displays typical modern teenage habits, such as taking selfies, using modern slang, and posting about her travels on social media. After encountering the inhabitants of Gensokyo, she gradually grows more receptive to the idea of forming friendships.

Abilities

Sumireko possesses the ability to manipulate psychic powers. Her primary skill is psychokinesis, complemented by pyrokinesis, teleportation, and levitation. In combat, she functions as a fortress-style fighter, using telekinesis to hurl massive debris, bus stops, utility poles, and street signs at her opponents. She throws Zener cards as standard danmaku projectiles, utilizes a self-made 3D-printed handgun in battle, and can even ride a motorized panda park car to rush targets.

Background

Living in the Kanto region, Sumireko experienced a brief mysterious disappearance near a shrine during her childhood. Upon entering Higashifukami High School, she created the unofficial Secret Sealing Club to alienate prospective friends. Desiring to break through to the fantasy realm, she crafted magical Power Stones (Occult Balls) to weaken the Great Hakurei Barrier from the outside. Although her plot was thwarted by Hakurei Reimu and others, the incident caused her to contract a state known as dream-soul detachment, allowing her to physically visit Gensokyo whenever she falls asleep. Subsequently, she navigates multiple incidents involving dream worlds, doppelgängers, and urban legends.

Relationships

Hakurei Reimu initially fought Sumireko to protect the barrier, but later welcomed her as a frequent guest in Gensokyo. Kirisame Marisa looks out for her safety while expressing curiosity toward her modern technology. Ibaraki Kasen acts as a close friend who joins her in occult experiments, while Morichika Rinnosuke regularly interacts with her at Kourindou by appraising Outside World artifacts she brings. Doremy Sweet monitors her unique condition of accessing Gensokyo via dreams. Her connection to Usami Renko remains a mystery, despite their matching surnames and identical hat designs.

Trivia

Her musical theme is 'Last Occultism ~ Esotericist of the Present World'. Her given name, Sumireko, derives from the violet flower ('sumire'), whose flower language includes 'daydream'—referencing her habit of entering Gensokyo through her sleep. She is one of the rare characters introduced as a fighting game final boss who later transitioned into a playable STG protagonist.
