Overview
Mugetsu is a character from the fourth Touhou Project installment, Touhou Gensoukyou ~ Lotus Land Story. A demon who serves as a master of the unnamed Dream World, she appears as an Extra Stage boss alongside her elder twin sister Gengetsu, with whom she is labeled as part of the "worst and most evil twin sisters." Although dressed in maid attire, official remarks describe her as a "fake maid" rather than a real servant. Proud of her realm, she looks down on humans, yet quickly calls upon her sister when defeated.
Appearance
Mugetsu features chin-length straight blonde hair and golden eyes, adorned with a pale pink maid headband. Her outfit comprises a blue and pink short-sleeved maid dress accented with a oversized red bow tie at the collar. Over the dress, she wears a white apron distinguished by two overlapping front panels.
Personality
Mugetsu maintains an aloof and stoic demeanour with a constant poker face, holding immense pride in her domain. She becomes easily enraged if her realm is insulted and demonstrates cold indifference toward human lives. Despite her harsh attitude, she adheres to a sense of battle fairness, engaging intruders in direct one-on-one combat. When defeated, her composure vanishes into flustered embarrassment, prompting her to rely on her elder twin sister.
Abilities
Mugetsu wields formidable demonic powers, with her body flashing a milky-white light prior to executing attacks. In battle, she is the first Extra Stage boss in the series to deploy a barrier that neutralizes player bombs. Her bullet hell patterns consist of randomized combinations of five attack sequences alongside high-density non-directional streams, escalating into a severe enrage phase if the fight exceeds roughly one minute.
Background
Mugetsu co-ruled the Dream World alongside her elder twin sister, Gengetsu. When human intruders like Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame entered her territory, she confronted them to assert her dominance over the realm. She fought them using intense bullet patterns but was ultimately vanquished, after which she summoned Gengetsu—who had been observing nearby—to fight the intruders in her place.
Relationships
Mugetsu shares a tight-knit relationship with her elder twin sister, Gengetsu, relying heavily on her authority and calling for her help immediately upon losing a battle. Towards human intruders like Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, she maintains a condescending attitude, yet shows enough combat etiquette to face them individually rather than ambushing them together.
Trivia
Her dedicated theme song is titled "Maid Gensou ~ Icemilk Magic," though its internal track file is labeled "Maid Mugen ~ Icemilk Magic." Official comments describe her as a "fake maid." One of her bullet formations was later reused for Fujiwara no Mokou's Spell Card "Forgiveness: Honest Man's Death" in Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night. In fan culture, she is celebrated during June due to Japanese wordplay on the number six.
