Star Sapphire

Overview

Star Sapphire is a starlight fairy from the Touhou Project series who serves as one of the central characters in the Touhou Sangetsusei manga series alongside her companions in the Three Fairies of Light. Often referred to simply as Star, she also acts as a boss character in the game Fairy Wars. Originally inhabiting a massive tree in the Forest of Magic, she later relocates with her group to a large tree behind the Hakurei Shrine.

Appearance

Star Sapphire has a short stature with long, waist-length black or dark brown hair featuring straight-cut bangs, paired with a large blue head ribbon. She possesses large wings shaped like those of a swallowtail butterfly. Her main attire consists of a blue dress and brown knee-high boots. Her clothing changes with the seasons, ranging from long-sleeved dresses with petal-like frills in spring and autumn to a short-sleeved version layered with an apron during summer, sometimes adorned with star patterns.

Personality

On the surface, Star Sapphire appears calm and sensible, but she possesses a cunning and elusive streak. While she enjoys playing tricks alongside her fellow fairies, she rarely takes the lead in direct confrontations and is remarkably quick to slip away whenever danger arises. More composed and practical than her peers, she avoids getting caught in traps. Her personal hobbies include cultivating potted mushroom bonsai, and she exhibits a strong fondness for alcoholic beverages while frequently preparing and serving food for her group.

Abilities

Star Sapphire possesses the ability to sense the presence and movement of living beings across a wide area. This radar-like sensing operates independently of weather conditions, though it cannot detect stationary objects or differentiate between humans and animals. Her detection can also be bypassed by creatures that manipulate wavelengths, and its precision degrades when she is intoxicated. While not inherently combat-oriented, she occasionally uses dangerous items, such as concealing real explosives within snowballs to inflict severe damage.

Background

Forming the Three Fairies of Light alongside Sunny Milk and Luna Child, Star Sapphire originally resided near the Forest of Magic, spending her days orchestrating various pranks. The trio eventually moved their living quarters to a tree behind the Hakurei Shrine. Rather than confronting humans or monsters directly, she usually acts as a lookout to support her friends' schemes. She also demonstrates initiative when expanding their circle, such as recruiting new fairies encountered around the Human Village.

Relationships

Star Sapphire lives and regularly hangs out with her close friends Sunny Milk and Luna Child. She maintains friendly ties with other fairies including Cirno, Crownpiece, and Eternity Larva. She frequently interacts with Hakurei Shrine residents like Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame as targets for the group's antics, whereas Reisend Udongein Inaba represents a rare individual whose presence escapes her sensing capabilities.

Trivia

Her name is derived from the rare gem star sapphire, which exhibits a six-rayed star effect under light. Due to her straight-cut black hairstyle, fans often note a visual resemblance between her and Houraisan Kaguya. In fan tradition, unofficial character days are celebrated on July 7th and September 30th.
