Overview
Akimichi Chouchou is a kunoichi of Konohagakure and a supporting character in BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS. She is the only child of Akimichi Chouji and Karui. After graduating from the Ninja Academy, she attains the rank of Genin and is placed under the leadership of Kazamatsuri Moegi in Team 10. Alongside her teammates Nara Shikadai and Yamanaka Inojin, she forms the seventeenth generation of the traditional Ino-Shika-Cho trio. Blending her father's plump physique with her mother's dark complexion, she is a confident, food-loving ninja who brings a cheerful presence to her team.
Appearance
Akimichi Chouchou features dark skin and yellow eyes from her mother, combined with light brown hair and a plump build from her father. She wears her long hair in a two-side-up style with bangs covering her left eye, and sports white earrings. During her Academy days, she wears a light pink kimono with a butterfly-patterned obi. As a Genin, she transitions to a white kimono with an orange sash and a white forehead protector. In Part 2, her longer hair features twin butterfly hairpins, paired with a crop top, long trousers, and a butterfly-patterned jacket.
Personality
Chouchou has an extremely positive disposition and high self-esteem, inheriting her mother's optimistic attitude. She rarely cares about comments regarding her weight and is almost never seen without snacks like potato chips. She displays a distinctively self-centered, romantic nature, frequently mistaking simple interactions or even enemy attacks as signs that someone has developed a romantic interest in her. Despite these humorous delusions, she is deeply considerate and acts as a supportive, big-sister figure who looks out for her close friends whenever they face hardship.
Abilities
Chouchou utilizes the Akimichi clan's secret Yang Release techniques. Her primary fighting style relies on the Partial Expansion Jutsu to enlarge specific limbs during combat. She can also perform the full Multi-Size Jutsu and the Human Boulder technique, though she hesitates to use the latter out of self-consciousness. Her clan's calorie-burning Super Chocho Butterfly Mode transforms her physical mass into chakra wings; through rigorous training, she learned to harness its full combat strength. Additionally, she can execute Lightning Release: Thunderclap Fist, Transformation Jutsu, and String Light Formation sealing techniques.
Background
Born after the Fourth Shinobi World War to Akimichi Chouji and Karui, Chouchou grew up in Konohagakure and enrolled in the Ninja Academy. Unsure of her heritage, she initially embarked on a journey alongside her best friend Uchiha Sarada to find her true lineage, but quickly abandoned her doubts after seeing her father's slimmed-down state. Upon graduating as a Genin, she joined Team 10 and participated in the Chunin Exams as well as various missions, maturing through emotional heartbreak and dangerous encounters with enemies like Kara. In Part 2, she continues her duties while assisting in training younger ninja such as Uzumaki Himawari.
Relationships
Chouchou shares a warm bond with her parents, Akimichi Chouji and Karui, learning her clan's secret arts from her father. Her closest friend is Uchiha Sarada, with whom she has maintained a tight relationship since before their Academy days. As part of Team 10 led by Kazamatsuri Moegi, she forms the new generation of Ino-Shika-Cho with Nara Shikadai and Yamanaka Inojin. She also shares a mutual love for sweets with her Academy teacher Mitarashi Anko, and in later years acts as a mentor figure training Uzumaki Himawari.
Trivia
Manga creator Masashi Kishimoto described Chouchou's character design concept simply as a "fat Karui." Although she appeared without any spoken lines or major scenes in the original feature film BORUTO: NARUTO THE MOVIE, her role was expanded in a subsequent short animation release, eventually establishing her as a prominent main character in the TV anime adaptation.
