Dan possesses the signature Spirit Transformation Technique, which allows him to separate his soul from his physical body as a spirit. In this form, he can possess and control enemies, travel across long distances, and enter another person's subconscious to communicate or transfer chakra. Even when released from the Reanimation Jutsu, he maintains brief control over his spirit form to act before departing.
Background
After endorsing Tsunade's proposal for medical reform, Dan formed a deep romantic bond with her and received the First Hokage's pendant as a token of her faith in his dream. However, during a battlefield mission, he suffered catastrophic organ damage. Despite Tsunade's desperate efforts to heal him, he died in her arms, leaving her severely traumatized with a phobia of blood. Years later, during the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto Yakushi reincarnated him via Edo Tensei. When the jutsu was canceled, Dan used his spirit technique to fly to Tsunade's side, shielding her from an attack by Madara Uchiha and bestowing chakra upon her before peacefully passing on.
Relationships
He was the beloved partner of Tsunade, who entrusted him with the First Hokage's heirloom necklace after they bonded over shared ideals. Shizune is his niece. During a strategic meeting, he stepped forward to support Tsunade's proposal when Hiruzen Sarutobi hesitated due to wartime constraints.
