Overview
Kurama, also known as the Nine-Tails or the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, is a prominent Tailed Beast from NARUTO and BORUTO-ボルト- NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS. Formed by the Sage of Six Paths from the chakra of the Ten-Tails, Kurama possesses the largest chakra reserves and greatest power among the nine Tailed Beasts. Held by Konohagakure, it was sealed within hosts across generations, most notably Uzumaki Naruto. Initially viewed as a terrifying disaster of pure malice, Kurama eventually becomes Naruto's trusted companion.
Appearance
Kurama is a giant fox with orange-red fur and nine sweeping tails. Rather than a purely canine structure, its skeleton resembles a humanoid or demon frame, featuring distinct black markings framing its sharp red eyes. Over time, its physique filled out with thicker fur and a broader head. During a rampaging state where eight tails manifested, it appeared as a skinless, hairless giant. Following its eventual demise and early rebirth, it briefly took on the form of a small fox cub.
Personality
Having been used as a living weapon for generations, Kurama developed a bitter distrust of humanity and a cynical, fierce temperament. Beneath its proud and aggressive demeanor lies a deeply stubborn and tsundere nature. Though it originally tempted Naruto to break his seal so it could take over his body, it grew to respect his resolve and ultimately became a fiercely loyal friend. Kurama holds a competitive view toward other Tailed Beasts—often bickering with Shukaku over tail count—and deeply reveres the Sage of Six Paths as a creator.
Abilities
Kurama commands unmatched chakra reserves, allowing it to unleash devastating Tailed Beast Bombs capable of matching the combined attacks of multiple other beasts. It can also generate fire and violent gusts of wind, alongside possess the rare ability to sense human malice, instantly exposing concealed enemies. By sharing its chakra with its host, it unlocks powerful transformations reminiscent of the Sage of Six Paths. In extreme circumstances, it can activate Baryon Mode, consuming its own life force to grant temporary, overwhelming power.
Background
Originally controlled by Uchiha Madara during his duel against Senju Hashirama, Kurama was sealed inside Uzumaki Mito and later Uzumaki Kushina. During the Nine-Tails' attack on Konohagakure, Namikaze Minato split its chakra into Yin and Yang halves, sealing the Yang half into the infant Naruto. Though it initially sought to break free, Kurama formed a genuine bond with Naruto during the Fourth Great Ninja War. During the battle against Otsutsuki Isshiki, Kurama sacrificed its life force through Baryon Mode, only to be resurrected years later inside Naruto's daughter, Uzumaki Himawari.
Relationships
Kurama forms an indelible bond with Uzumaki Naruto, evolving from a hostile prisoner into his closest ally. It was previously bound to Uzumaki Mito, Uzumaki Kushina, and Namikaze Minato. Among its fellow Tailed Beasts, it shares a petty rivalry with Shukaku while maintaining a mutual respect with Gyuki. Kurama harbors deep resentment toward Uchiha Madara and the Uchiha clan for repeatedly controlling its power. In the next generation, it reemerges inside Uzumaki Himawari.
Trivia
The name Kurama is believed to be derived from the number nine combined with the Tibetan word for a holy teacher (Lama), or referenced from Mount Kurama. In the film THE LAST, it is revealed that Kurama has notoriously bad handwriting. Additionally, when Naruto attempted to harmonize with Fukasaku during Sage Mode training, the fusion failed not due to natural chakra incompatibility, but simply because Kurama was jealous of Naruto relying on someone else.
