Overview
Jiraiya is a prominent ninja in Masashi Kishimoto's manga series NARUTO. Recognized alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade as one of Konohagakure's Legendary Sannin, he was trained by the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Known as the Toad Sage due to his contract with the toads of Mount Myoboku, he served as a master to key figures including the Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze and the protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. Beyond his heroic reputation, he played a crucial role in shaping future generations and gathering intel across the shinobi world.
Appearance
Jiraiya is recognizable by his long, spiky white hair tied in the back and red markings extending downward from his eyes. He wears a specialized forehead protector inscribed with the character for oil. His attire, which shares visual elements with the Monkey King Enma, is completed by wooden geta sandals and a massive scroll strapped across his back. When entering Sage Mode, the toad elders Fukasaku and Shima sit upon his shoulders.
Personality
Despite his status as an elite shinobi, Jiraiya has an exceptionally free-spirited and lecherous nature. He frequently breaks traditional vice rules by engaging in gambling, drinking, and peeping, earning a reputation as a shameless eccentric. He is also the author of the popular adult novel series Icha Icha, which garners him massive wealth. Nevertheless, he is deeply compassionate and holds an unwavering belief that a true ninja is defined by unyielding perseverance.
Abilities
Jiraiya possesses elemental mastery in Fire and Earth Release and utilizes specialized jutsu that manipulate his long hair for offense and defense, such as Needle Jizo and Wild Lion's Mane. A master of Mount Myoboku summoning techniques, he commands giant toads, toad-based barrier jutsu, and sticky toad oil attacks. He is skilled in executing the Rasengan and can enter Sage Mode to draw upon natural energy, though because his mastery of Sage Mode is incomplete, he requires assistance from Fukasaku and Shima to gather nature energy.
Background
Jiraiya earned the title of Legendary Sannin during the Second Shinobi World War alongside his teammates. Following the conflict, he took in three war orphans—Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan—training them until they could survive on their own. After the defection of Orochimaru and the tragic death of Minato Namikaze, Jiraiya spent years traveling as an informant while gathering intel on threats to Konohagakure. He later became Naruto Uzumaki's primary master. During an investigation into the Akatsuki, he infiltrated Amegakure and fought Pain, sacrificing his life to decipher Pain's identity and send the vital clue back to his home village before sinking into the ocean depths.
Relationships
Train under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, Jiraiya shared a complicated bond with Orochimaru, regretting his inability to prevent his former friend's fall into darkness. As a mentor, he instructed Minato Namikaze, Nagato, Yahiko, Konan, and Naruto Uzumaki. He formed a profound, grandfatherly relationship with Naruto, serving as both his godfather and teacher. Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha sit within his lineage as indirect grand-students through Minato.
Trivia
Jiraiya's character concept and name stem from the classic Japanese folk story Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari. His connection to characters like Tsunade and Orochimaru mirrors the legendary three-way deadlock motif featured in the original tale.
