Overview
Hyuuga Hanabi is a fictional character in Masashi Kishimoto's manga series Naruto and its sequel series, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. As the second daughter of the prestigious Hyuuga clan's main house, she is five years younger than her elder sister, Hyuuga Hinata. Recognizing her exceptional martial talents that surpassed her sister's early on, her father Hyuuga Hiashi gave her rigorous training to make her the clan's heir. In the Boruto era, she advances to the rank of Jonin and serves as the leader of Team 15.
Appearance
Hanabi possesses the pupilless white eyes characteristic of the Hyuuga clan. In her childhood, she sported short black hair with a tomboyish wardrobe. As she matures into adulthood, her black hair grows long and is styled into a low-tied ponytail. She wears traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos paired with sashes or obis, along with small accessories like charms on her kunai, and often displays playful, feline facial expressions.
Personality
While initially quiet, serious, and intensely devoted to training under her father, Hanabi blossoms into a cheerful, outgoing, and playful young woman. She adores her older sister Hinata and actively supports her romantic endeavors. As an aunt, she dotes heavily on her nephew Boruto and niece Himawari, playfully insisting they address her as an older sister. As a Jonin instructor, she exhibits a caring yet passionate demeanor, not hesitating to deliver lengthy lectures when her students act recklessly. She also has a low tolerance for alcohol.
Abilities
Hanabi wields the Hyuuga clan's dojutsu kekkei genkai, the Byakugan, giving her a 360-degree field of vision, long-range perception, and the ability to see through solid objects and chakra pathways. She relies on the Gentle Fist fighting style to attack an opponent's internal chakra network. Her arsenal includes advanced clan techniques such as Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven for absolute defense, Eight Trigrams Thirty-Two Palms, Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm, and Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists.
Background
Defeating her sister Hinata in a childhood sparring match led her father to choose Hanabi as the clan's future head, subjecting her to intense training. During Pain's assault on the village, she was away on an errand with her father. In The Last: Naruto the Movie, she is captured by Toneri Otsutsuki, who steals her Byakugan, though her eyes are later restored after Toneri's defeat. At Naruto and Hinata's wedding, she carries a portrait of her late cousin Neji. In the Boruto era, she guides Team 15—consisting of Sumire Kakei, Wasabi Izuno, and Namida Suzumeno, later joined by Tsubaki Kurogane—and assists her family by testing Boruto's combat ability.
Relationships
Hanabi is the younger daughter of Hyuuga Hiashi and the younger sister of Hyuuga Hinata. Through Hinata's marriage, Uzumaki Naruto becomes her brother-in-law, and she acts as a loving aunt to Uzumaki Boruto and Uzumaki Himawari. Hyuuga Neji was her elder cousin. As the leader of Team 15, she maintains a mentor relationship with her genin students: Sumire Kakei, Wasabi Izuno, Namida Suzumeno, and Tsubaki Kurogane.
Trivia
Her favorite foods are bananas and milk, while her least favorite food is celery. Although her appearances in the original Naruto manga were sparse, she was selected as a playable character in video games such as Ultimate Ninja 3 and Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. Much of her personality and background details were expanded in the anime adaptation and the Boruto series.
