Karui

Overview

Karui is a kunoichi from Kumogakure in Masashi Kishimoto's manga series NARUTO and its adapted media. Trained as a disciple under Killer Bee, she forms a three-ninja squad alongside her teammates Omoi and Samui. Known for her fiery temperament and outspoken nature, she eventually marries Choji Akimichi of Konohagakure after the Fourth Shinobi World War, becoming the mother of Chocho Akimichi.

Appearance

Karui is a dark-skinned kunoichi with long red hair and yellow eyes. She wears earrings, possesses a slender, flat-chested build, and carries a sword as part of her gear.

Personality

Karui is hot-tempered, quick to pick fights, and highly outspoken. In contrast to her gloomy and overthinking teammate Omoi, she maintains a determined and optimistic mindset. She avoids formal speech entirely, speaking casually even toward the Raikage. Karui holds immense reverence for her master, Killer Bee, becoming enraged whenever he is threatened. Although her impulsiveness led her to violently attack Naruto Uzumaki out of frustration, she later harbored genuine guilt for her excessive behavior.

Abilities

Karui is skilled in using Lightning Release ninjutsu and specializes in close-quarters combat utilizing a sword. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, her martial proficiency earned her a position within the front-line close-combat unit.

Background

Raised in Kumogakure, Karui developed her skills under the tutelage of Killer Bee. Following her master's sudden capture by Sasuke Uchiha, she was sent to Konohagakure to gather intelligence. During this mission, she confronted Naruto Uzumaki, who refused to betray Sasuke's location; driven by fury, she beat him severely, though she later regretted the incident. In the Fourth Shinobi World War, she fought on the front lines in the Second Division against the White Zetsu army. After the war, she married Choji Akimichi and settled in Konohagakure, raising their daughter, Chocho Akimichi.

Relationships

Karui holds profound respect for her teacher, Killer Bee. She maintains a bickering yet trustful bond with her teammate Omoi, whose pessimistic nature continually clashes with her own, as well as her squad leader Samui. She harbored immense anger toward Sasuke Uchiha for harming her master, which led to her altercation with Naruto Uzumaki. Years later, she married Choji Akimichi, forming a family with him and raising their daughter, Chocho Akimichi. An anime-original story also introduces her younger brother named Yukai.

Trivia

Her name 'Karui' means 'light' in Japanese, creating a thematic contrast with her teammate 'Omoi,' whose name translates to 'heavy.' In the seventh official character popularity poll for the series, she placed 44th with a total of 27 votes.
