Shiranui Genma

Overview

Shiranui Genma is a Special Jonin from Konohagakure in the NARUTO series. He serves as the primary proctor for the final rounds of the Chunin Selection Exams and is a former personal bodyguard to the Fourth Hokage. Instantly recognizable by his bandana-style forehead protector and the senbon needle constantly held between his lips, he is portrayed as a calm, highly competent, and dependable veteran shinobi.

Appearance

Genma has short brown hair and brown eyes. He wears his ninja forehead protector wrapped around his head in the manner of a bandana and perpetually keeps a long toothpick-like senbon needle resting in his mouth.

Personality

Genma maintains a calm, composed, and impartial demeanor at all times. While he carries a relaxed and easygoing aura, he possesses strong self-esteem as a Konoha shinobi and strongly values action over words. He demonstrates wisdom and empathy toward younger ninja, offering insightful advice to Neji Hyuga using a caged bird metaphor to help the youth break free from his mental burden.

Abilities

As a Special Jonin, Genma is a formidable combatant. His signature attack involves spitting the senbon from his mouth with enough force and precision to directly counter and deflect thrown kunai. Additionally, having been taught the Flying Thunder God Technique by Namikaze Minato, Genma can execute this space-time ninjutsu alongside Namiashi Raidou and Tatami Iwashi to instantly teleport individuals, such as the Fifth Mizukage Terumi Mei, straight to distant battlefields.

Background

Genma graduated from the Ninja Academy at age ten and advanced to Chunin at thirteen. During his genin days, he served on a team led by Akamichi Chouza alongside Might Guy and Ebisu, surviving a dangerous encounter with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist thanks to Might Duy's sacrifice. He was later appointed as one of the Fourth Hokage's bodyguards. Replaced Gekkou Hayate as Chunin Exam proctor following the latter's death, he later confronted the Sand ninja Baki during the invasion of Konoha. While returning from a mission with Shizune, Namiashi Raidou, and Tatami Iwashi, he fought the Sound Four to the point of forcing them to use their Curse Marks before sustaining severe injuries. In the Fourth Great Ninja War, he protected the Daimyo and provided critical teleportation support.

Relationships

Genma holds immense respect for his former superior, Namikaze Minato, who taught him space-time ninjutsu. In his youth, he was assigned to Akamichi Chouza's squad alongside Might Guy and Ebisu. He shares a deep tactical bond with Namiashi Raidou and Tatami Iwashi, working together as the former Hokage guard squad to perform teleportation jutsu. He is also close with Shizune, who treated his injuries after battle, and belongs to the same generation of Konoha ninja as Hatake Kakashi, Sarutobi Asuma, Yuuhi Kurenai, Nohara Rin, and Uchiha Obito.
