Overview
Ichibi no Shukaku, also known simply as Shukaku, is one of the Tailed Beasts originating from the Naruto and Boruto franchises. Created by the Sage of Six Paths through the division of the Ten-Tails' chakra, it was historically passed down and sealed within Sunagakure. Proud of its Absolute Defense, this massive tanuki-like entity plays a prominent role across the series.
Appearance
Shukaku is a massive, tanuki-like creature constructed of sand, covered with violet cursed seal patterns across its body. It features golden irises with diamond-shaped pupils, surrounded by matching diamond markings pointing in four diagonal directions, alongside prominent black rings encircling its eyes down to its fangs. Its teeth and gums merge directly into its facial structure without a tongue. It possesses a single large tail resembling tied rows of heavy scales. On certain occasions, it takes on a form compressed inside a tea kettle, revealing only its limbs, head, and tail.
Personality
Shukaku is boisterous, violent, and highly aggressive, though it possesses a complex side. Initially harboring intense malice toward humans for treating Tailed Beasts as mere weapons, it gradually softens its demeanor toward those who earn its respect. It held genuine reverence for the Sage of Six Paths and its former host Bunpuku. It maintains a fiery, combative rivalry with Kurama, leading to frequent bickering.
Abilities
Capable of manipulating its malleable sand body for powerful physical strikes and restraints, Shukaku is unique among Tailed Beasts for using complex sealing techniques and hand seals. It adeptly employs Wind Release and the Kekkei Genkai Magnet Release. Its signature technique, Wind Release: Drilling Air Bullet, expels highly compressed air balls imbued with chakra from its mouth. It can also form and fire the devastating Tailed Beast Bomb.
Background
Sealed away by Sunagakure as a military asset, Shukaku passed through several hosts. Among them, it formed a rare mutual connection with the monk Bunpuku. Later sealed inside Gaara, its malicious influence inflicted severe insomnia upon the boy. After being extracted by the Akatsuki, it was eventually freed during the Fourth Shinobi World War and chose to live freely in the Land of Wind.
Relationships
Shukaku held high regard for the Sage of Six Paths and deeply trusted Bunpuku, seeing the Sage's compassionate spirit in him. Though initially hostile toward Gaara, the two eventually forged a strong bond of mutual respect. It shares a hostile rivalry with Kurama due to disputes over tail counts. It trusts Naruto Uzumaki and unexpectedly bond with his daughter, Himawari Uzumaki.
Trivia
Shukaku's design is inspired by the tanuki from the Japanese folktale Bunpuku Chagama as well as the legend of the monk Shukaku. In the series, a popular toy based on its likeness named 'Ichibi no Shukaku' is sold in Sunagakure.
