Overview

Isobu, also known as the Three-Tails, is one of the nine Tailed Beasts in the Naruto series. Possessing the form of a massive aquatic turtle with three distinct tails, it was historically bound to Jinchuriki associated with Kirigakure. Following the loss of its host, Isobu resided quietly in a large lake as a wild Tailed Beast. Despite its intimidating monster-like appearance, it exhibits a surprisingly reserved and childlike disposition.

Appearance

Isobu features a massive, heavily armored body combining attributes of freshwater turtles, demons, and humans, alongside marine elements such as crabs, precision-like coral, and shrimp. It is one-eyed with its right eye shut, bearing elongated claws and shark-like tusk structures around its face. Its underside displays ventral grooves resembling those of a fin whale, while its three armor-plated tails resemble crustacean tails. Portions of its side shell can retract and fold inward.

Personality

Contrary to its terrifying and monstrous exterior, Isobu possesses a mild, introverted, and surprisingly gentle demeanor. It refers to itself using the humble and juvenile Japanese pronoun 'boku,' displaying childish personality traits. Having undergone temporary death and rebirth due to the passing of its human host, it shows little inclination for unnecessary conflict, preferring to exist peacefully away from human interference.

Abilities

Despite lacking hind legs and fins, Isobu possesses outstanding mobility, executing a high-speed rotational attack called Kagenade by folding its side armor to roll like a tire on water and land. It commands formidable Water Release techniques, launching water spouts, Tailed Beast Balls, twin shockwave spheres, and massive tidal waves. Its arsenal also includes generating hallucinogenic mist, emitting high-frequency roars capable of shattering diamond-hard crystals, joining its tail tips into a spear, and producing living coral via Yin-Yang Release logic. Additionally, it can traverse spatiotemporal boundaries and spawn internal mini-clones that eliminate intruders like cellular antibodies.

Background

Created as one of the nine Tailed Beasts, Isobu was historically exploited during ninja conflicts, temporarily sealed within Rin Nohara as part of a plot against Konohagakure. It later became bound to Yagura Karatachi, the Fourth Mizukage. Following Yagura's demise, Isobu temporarily vanished before reconstituting in the natural world. Living unsealed as a wild beast at the bottom of a lake, it remained isolated until it was targeted and ultimately captured by the Akatsuki members Deidara and Tobi.

Relationships

Isobu shared a connection with its former Jinchuriki, including the Konohagakure kunoichi Rin Nohara and the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi. After the demise of Yagura, Isobu lived in solitude away from humans until it was confronted by the Akatsuki operatives Deidara and Tobi, who defeated and captured the Tailed Beast for their organization's objectives.

Trivia

The name Isobu originates from the legendary Japanese sea monster Isonade, though its visual design bears closer resemblance to traditional yokai such as Umibozu and Umiosho rather than a shark-like creature. Creator Masashi Kishimoto noted that classic kaiju cinema heavily inspired the concepts of the Tailed Beasts. Consequently, Isobu's high-speed rolling mobility and aquatic propulsion mechanics reflect clear homage to the iconic kaiju Gamera.
