Overview

Pain serves as the leader of the criminal organization Akatsuki in the Naruto series and holds absolute authority over Amegakure after overthrowing its former ruler, Hanzo. Revered as a deity by the shinobi of his village and referring to himself as a god, Pain directs the operations of his subordinates from afar. In truth, Pain is not a single living individual, but rather the collective moniker for six separate corpses puppeted remotely by Nagato, known as the Six Paths of Pain.

Appearance

Pain possesses spiked orange hair and purple, ripple-patterned Rinnegan eyes. His facial features, ears, and body are pierced with multiple black metal rods that serve as chakra receivers. He wears an Amegakure forehead protector featuring a horizontal slash drawn across the symbol, alongside the signature black cloak adorned with red clouds.

Personality

Pain maintains a detached and emotionless demeanor. Believing that enduring continuous suffering elevated him from mortal status into a deity, he acts with absolute authority. He possesses a deeply cynical view of the shinobi world's perpetual cycle of hatred, arguing that true understanding between people cannot occur without shared suffering.

Abilities

Pain wields the Rinnegan, a legendary eye technique characterized by a concentric circle pattern. Through this power, he transmits chakra into the black metal receivers embedded throughout the bodies, granting him complete remote control over all six individual corpses simultaneously.

Background

After assassinating Hanzo, Pain assumed control over Amegakure. As the head of Akatsuki, he orchestrated the capture of the Tailed Beasts, intending to weaponize their power to control the global conflict market and force world peace. Though usually managing operations from the shadows, he actively takes the field when Amegakure is infiltrated and key Akatsuki operatives begin to fall in battle.

Relationships

Pain commands the members of Akatsuki, including Konan, Zetsu, Itachi Uchiha, Kisame Hoshigaki, Deidara, Sasori, Kakuzu, Hidan, and Tobi. The primary body representing Pain, the Deva Path, is constructed from the body of Yahiko, a childhood companion of Nagato and Konan. The second Animal Path utilizes the corpse of the Amegakure kunoichi Ajisai. His ultimate target is Naruto Uzumaki, seeking to capture the Nine-Tails sealed within him.

Trivia

In fan works and illustrations, depictions of Pain almost exclusively feature the Deva Path built from Yahiko's corpse, followed in popularity by the female second Animal Path.
