Zetsu

Overview

Zetsu is a character appearing in the Naruto series and its sequel BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS. As a member of the Akatsuki organization wearing the "Gen" ring, he functions mainly as a scout and gatherer of information rather than a front-line combatant, while also handling the disposal of corpses.

Appearance

Zetsu has a body split into distinct black and white halves, short green hair, and yellow eyes. His upper body is enveloped by large, flytrap-like leaf structures that enclose his head.

Personality

Zetsu possesses dual personalities corresponding to his two halves. The white side exhibits a lighthearted and talkative demeanor, whereas the black side acts in a dark, scheming, and calculating manner. He harbors deep obsession toward his creator while willingly betraying other figures he serves.

Abilities

Using the Mayfly technique, Zetsu can merge his body with the earth and plant networks to travel rapidly while completely concealing his presence. He can also attach parasitic spores to targets to absorb their chakra and redistribute it, as well as assimilate with a powerful host to bring forth Kaguya Otsutsuki.

Background

White Zetsu is the mutated remnant of ancient humans trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, while Black Zetsu is the physical embodiment of Kaguya Otsutsuki's will. Over thousands of years, Black Zetsu manipulated figures such as Madara Uchiha to execute the Eye of the Moon Plan and orchestrate Kaguya's eventual return.

Relationships

Zetsu is fanatically devoted to his mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki. Though he served under Madara Uchiha and Tobi (Obito Uchiha) as superiors, he ultimately betrayed them to fulfill his true agenda. Hagoromo Otsutsuki and Hamura Otsutsuki are his brothers.

Trivia

In the Japanese animated version, a single voice actor, Nobuo Tobida, performs the roles of both Black Zetsu and White Zetsu by dramatically altering his vocal pitch. Naruto Uzumaki frequently refers to him by the nickname "aloe" due to his carnivorous plant-like features.
