Appearance
Gamabunta is a giant toad with red skin, yellow sclerae, and black pupils. He features a prominent facial scar and wears traditional clothing. He is consistently depicted smoking a massive kiseru pipe and carries a colossal short sword.
Personality
Gamabunta possesses a mobster-like persona centered around a strict code of chivalry and honor. Gruff and stubborn, he refuses to obey a summoner unless they have earned his respect or exchanged ceremonial sake cups with him. Despite his abrasive exterior and strictness toward his sons Gamakichi and Gamatatsu, he is deeply loyal and protective toward those he accepts as allies or subordinates.
Abilities
Gamabunta possesses immense physical strength and vast Senjutsu chakra. He wields a massive short sword capable of severing the limbs of giant tailed beasts. His techniques include Water Release: Gunshot, which fires a high-pressure sphere of water, and spitting highly flammable oil. He can perform Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet in tandem with Jiraiya, execute the Summoning: Food Cart Destroyer Technique to crush foes from above using his immense weight, and utilize Combination Transformation to shape-shift alongside a partner.
Background
Gamabunta bonded with Jiraiya during Jiraiya's early training days at Mount Myoboku. He later formed a contract with Minato Namikaze, aiding him during the Nine-Tails' attack on Konohagakure by temporarily pinning the beast down. Years later, Naruto Uzumaki summoned him while training with Jiraiya. After putting Naruto through a trial of endurance, Gamabunta recognized him as a worthy summoner. He subsequently provided crucial support in key conflicts, such as assisting Naruto against Gaara's One-Tail and fighting during the assault by Pain.
Relationships
Gamabunta shares summoning contracts with three generations of shinobi: Jiraiya, Minato Namikaze, and Naruto Uzumaki. Though initially dismissive of Naruto, he eventually accepted him as his subordinate after Naruto passed his trial. He is the father of Gamakichi and Gamatatsu, showing strict yet affectionate paternal care toward them. Within Mount Myoboku, he respects elders such as the Great Toad Sage, Fukasaku, and Shima. He also maintains a rivalry with Orochimaru's summon Manda and Tsunade's summon Katsuyu as part of the Three-Way Deadlock.
Trivia
Gamabunta's name, mobster-style personality, and rough dialect are derived from the late Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara, who was famous for his iconic roles in classic Japanese crime films.
