Overview
Hidan is a rogue ninja from Yugakure and a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki in the Naruto series. Partnered with Kakuzu, he is part of a duo known for their extreme resilience in battle. Fanatically devoted to the faith of Jashin, he pursues slaughter as a religious duty and relies on his unique cursed techniques to defeat his opponents.
Appearance
Hidan has silver, slicked-back hair and reddish-purple eyes. He wears a necklace featuring the symbol of his religion and a ring marked with the character for "three" on his left index finger. When activating his cursed technique after ingesting an opponent's blood, his skin turns black with white skeletal markings.
Personality
Foul-mouthed, arrogant, and highly self-centered, Hidan speaks with a distinct, drawn-out tone. He shows little reverence for his superiors or peers in Akatsuki, frequently mocking them. Despite his rude demeanor, he is intensely devout regarding the Jashin faith, prioritizing its strict doctrines of slaughter over material gain and constantly arguing with his money-focused partner, Kakuzu.
Abilities
Hidan possesses an immortal body resulting from secret religious experiments, enabling him to survive decapitation and severe dismemberment, though he lacks true limb regeneration and still requires food to avoid starvation. He wields a triple-bladed scythe attached to a cable to draw enemy blood and a retractable black spear for self-inflicted wounds. Through his secret technique, Curse Technique: Death Possession Blood, he creates a circle with an inverted triangle using his own blood; while standing within it after ingesting the opponent's blood, any harm inflicted on his own body is directly transferred to the target.
Background
Dissatisfied with Yugakure's shift toward pacifism, Hidan slaughtered people in his home village and became a rogue ninja. After joining the Jashin cult and obtaining his unique body, he was recruited into Akatsuki to pair with Kakuzu. During their missions, they captured Yugakure's Jinchuriki Yugito Nii and killed Chiriku of the Fire Temple, leading to a fatal encounter with Asuma Sarutobi. In a subsequent battle, Shikamaru Nara analyzed his curse mechanism, trapped him in the Nara clan's private forest, blew his body apart, and buried his remains deep underground.
Relationships
He is partnered with Kakuzu, with whom he constantly bickers over opposing values, though they coordinate effectively in battle. He treats Akatsuki leadership like Pain with open disrespect and mocks fellow members like Deidara. By taking the life of Asuma Sarutobi, he formed a bitter rivalry with Shikamaru Nara, who eventually engineered his total neutralization.
Trivia
The first character in Hidan's name is derived from the rook ("hisha") in Japanese chess (shogi). His signature multi-bladed scythe was originally designed with various hidden mechanical functions that were not fully depicted in the main story. Within the Akatsuki organization, he is the sole member who never directly interacts with Naruto Uzumaki.
