Overview
Hyuuga Neji is a featured character in the manga and anime series "NARUTO", originating from the Hidden Leaf Village of the Land of Fire. As a member of Team Guy (Third Team) led by Might Guy, he serves alongside teammates Rock Lee and Tenten. Born into the branch house of the prestigious Hyuuga clan, he was acclaimed from early childhood as an extraordinary prodigy. Promoted to Jounin ahead of all his peers in Part II, he is a formidable martial artist mastering both the Byakugan and the Gentle Fist technique.
Appearance
Neji features long black hair tied near the ends, with long framing bangs hanging down both sides of his face. He has the pupil-less pale eyes of the Byakugan. On his forehead rests the cursed seal of the branch house, which he covers with his Leaf Village forehead protector. In Part I, he wore bandages around his forehead and arm, whereas in Part II, he transitioned to loose-fitting white traditional garments with wide sleeves. Upon activating the Byakugan, the blood vessels around his eyes strain visibly.
Personality
Neji is naturally calm, highly realistic, and possesses exceptional analytical abilities. In his youth, traumatized by the circumstances of his father's death, he held a deeply fatalistic view that destiny is unalterable, making him cold and aggressive toward others. After his combat with Uzumaki Naruto and learning the true circumstances of his father's choice, his disposition softened into a compassionate and dependable comrade. His intensely serious nature also makes him an effective straight man in comedic spin-offs.
Abilities
Neji wields the Kekkei Genkai known as the Byakugan, granting near-360-degree vision, extreme range, x-ray penetration, and the ability to discern chakra pathways and tenketsu nodes. Through the Gentle Fist style, he delivers precision chakra strikes directly into tenketsu to damage organs and sever chakra flow. Despite his branch house status, he independently mastered restricted main-house secrets, including the defensive "Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven", the disabling "Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms", the ranged "Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm", and "Eight Gates Breakdown". Against Kidomaru, he demonstrated sending chakra backward through chakra threads to destroy internal organs.
Background
Born as the son of branch house leader Hyuuga Hizashi, Neji was four years old when his father perished in place of his twin brother following a conflict involving cousin Hyuuga Hinata. Believing his father was forced into sacrifice, Neji harbored resentment until his Chunin Exam match against Uzumaki Naruto, after which uncle Hyuuga Hiashi revealed that Hizashi died by his own free will. He later survived a critical combat victory against Kidomaru during the Sasuke Retrieval Mission. Having risen to Jounin rank by Part II, Neji gave his life during the Fourth Shinobi World War to protect Naruto and Hinata from a lethal attack by the Ten-Tails.
Relationships
Neji's family includes his father Hyuuga Hizashi, uncle Hyuuga Hiashi, and cousins Hyuuga Hinata and Hyuuga Hanabi. Though initially hostile toward Hinata, he reconciled with her and grew intensely protective. Uzumaki Naruto was the rival and dear friend who shattered Neji's rigid stance on fate; Naruto and Hinata's children, Uzumaki Boruto and Uzumaki Himawari, are his first cousins once removed. Within Team Guy, he respected leader Might Guy and maintained absolute mutual trust with teammates Rock Lee and Tenten.
Trivia
Neji's preferred food is herring buckwheat noodles (nishin soba), whereas his least favorite is pumpkin. His hobby is meditation, and his favored phrase is "leap". His name refers to a screw (neji), paralleling his cousin's son Uzumaki Boruto (bolt). He ranked consistently high across all seven official character popularity polls. In the spin-off "Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth", he was frequently drawn into comedic crossdressing roles under the moniker "Neji-ko". In the movie "Road to Ninja", his alternate-reality incarnation was portrayed as a pervert who used his Byakugan to spy on women.
